it's doggie lo jack, a pet locator
if you dog is lost and found by the spca or brought to a vet they can scan it and get your contact info so they can let you know where your animal is

Yes. However, there are different kinds and they can't all be read by the same scanners........So........
You should ask your vet what is the best kind to get for your area (most common). Because, if you get the kind that say - only Petland can read - then it won't help you find you dog. That is, if say - the ASPCA found you dog and uses a different scanner.

The point of this is - there really needs to be one standard kind - but that wouldn't be America - would it? !!!!

They can if you register it with the company that makes it.

When they implant the microchip they should give you registration papers. It usually costs like $12-20/year. And they will send you a dog tag with the chip# on it too.

If your chip is not registered with all your information and your dues are not paid, the company will not have your info to give to people and they will not be able to get your pet back to you.

There is HomeAgain and Avid. It DOES NOT locate them when they are lost. It helps someone that finds the dog get it back to you.
No GSP technology yet.

Most scanners that are in shelters and vet hospitals now are universal...they read all microchips.
