My dog barks a lot and it is usually nothing in particular that she needs to bark at. She almost never responds to "No!". We have tried a shock collar but we never have it on her all the time so we can't always control her. If it is off she thinks there is no problem with barking. What is an effective way to get her to bark less or possibly not at all?

Have a surgery to get her larynx removed.
Seriously, they do that in some countries.

Forget the "not at all". Dog's bark, that is how they let us know something is wrong and we need to check them or what is going on outside.

If she is young it's a play thing. She may also be trying to get your attention if she's bored. A very common thing with dogs. When you say 'No' is it a no or a NO? Try looking in her eyes and don't look away, I don't care if it's for 10 minutes, YOU DON'T LOOK AWAY. She has to. You are establishing that you are the alpha dog. When she does look away tell her she's a good dog in you best baby voice.

As most dog's like to bark at night get her really tired before you go to bed. I have a Border Collie that had so much energy when he was younger(1-5 years old) that I had to let him chase me on the tractor every night so he'd sleep and not bark all night long. Now, you don't have to go make her chase your car but do some activity at night, play catch or jog with her. She'll feel useful and be satisfied, therefore content.

SPRAY BOTTLE! Go to the store and buy a cheap spray bottle. Fill it with water, everytime she barks, spray her. Make sure you adjust the nozle so that the water comes out in a straight stream. My chihuahua, everytime he barks now, all we have to do is show him the spray bottle, or just say spray bottle. He stops barking right away. It's either that or teach your dog german police commands, my dad taught our chihuahua that. So he know's that also. LOL. But the spray bottle works great! Hope this helped!
