My Dad is going to be 55. He served his country, from the age of 17, for 39 years. He is a disabled veteran.

He is very humble and would hate any praise....but he retains his medals, his "shadow box" and his photo albums. Should I oraganize a reuninon for him? I love and respect him.

I guess I should direct this at other vets.

Rek T. Thanks. But he has been invited many times. He gets mail and invitations. He is so humble, sometimes it frustrates me.

Then, I think about what a real hero he is, my hero. That's what I hope to share with him.

What a Kind and Honorable gesture on your part !!!!
My husband is 100 percent disabled from Viet Nam, at first couldn't talk about it. But time heals....He has been on T.V., been to schools and the kids ...he let them ask anything they wanted. He has spoken at Memorial day parades, spoke at P.O.W. events. He lives in pain everyday since the age of 24, which was a old age to be in Viet Nam, most were only 18 or 19.
Our oldest son is 50 percent disabled from the special forces, he served 11 years in the army, now is going to College.
Our youngest son has 9 years in the army, re-uped for 3 more years when he was in Iraq.
God Bless your Father, and all the veterans, and service people who are serving now. Or we wouldn't have the FREEDOM to be on our computer answering question !!!
If you want to have a reunion, a party, or a family dinner for your father, you GO FOR IT ! I think you are Very Wise ...way Beyond your Age. And a Very Thoughtful Person ! Be Sure to Tell Your Dad ..Thank You for His Service to Our Country !!!

Sure that sounds like a good time you are a very good daughter for wanting to do that, I am Ret Navy and I am married but with no children So I can tell you that I would be honored if my daughter was to do that. I am also very humble I don't even have a shadow box but I would not have traded my Navy experience for anything, the good as well as the tough times. My hat is off to you I hope it works out for you.

That is a very touchy situation, there are some people that would love it and some that would perfer to think that the time that they served never happend - it took 53 yeard for my granfather to even mention anything about WWII - I would instead make a slide show over his whole life, birth till now that covers everything instead of focusing on just his military days, include in but don't make it your main focus, make your famliy the main focus. But you know your dad the best.

I think that would be a good thing to do; if you are re-uniting him with old friends from the service it is not only for him but for them which might make him feel less like the center of attention since you say he doesn't like the limelight. You are obviously a thoughtful daughter and he should be proud of you..

If he isn't already get him a membership package to the local VFW/American Legion
If he is a member have them help you set something up.
