How much food your dog needs is based on the size of your dog, the type of food, and your dog's energy needs. On a high quality food, a small (around 10 pounds), fairly active dog would need about 1 cup of food a day. Usually food bags will have the recommended daily serving size on the back. Remember, this is a DAILY recommendation. If you feed your dog twice a day, that number should be divided in half each time you feed your dog. This number is also only a starting point. If your dog is very active, they may need a little more food (and if they are less active, a little less). I would stay on the recommended amount for a few weeks. If your dog seems to be gaining/losing weight, adjust the food accordingly.
One last hint: the higher quality the food, the less of it your dog will need. Foods with a lot of fillers like corn and wheat fill your dog up with indigestible items so the dog will need more food to meet caloric needs.

There should be a guide on the bag telling you how much to feed the dog depending on weight.
If you look at the dog from above and you can't see a waist then the dog is probably too big and you need to cut down food and exercise it.
If you can see the ribs then you should feed it a little bit extra until you don't see them, but you should be able to feel them some.

Chicken Soup is actaully a good dog food at a great price. I have fed my dog's that for awhile until we moved and I cannot find any retailers around here that sell it. But if you have to cut back, I would go with them. I think when I bought it, it evened out to about $1 per pound of food. And don't stress, everyone is feeling the money crunch right now. I am currently paying off Hospital Bills and have had to cut the dog's food to Pedigree for a few weeks until I get these paid off.

All halfway decent food will have proper feeding guidelines on the packet.
Find out what the ideal weight is for your dog (based on breed, age and size) and feed the appropriate daily amount of dog food for the weight you want the dog to be. This varies a LOT between breeds and brands of food - I advise you to stay away from supermarket brands, they're low quality. I recommend Hills, Eukanuba, Royal Canin or Iams.

Most bags or cans of dog food have little feeding guides on them with the suggested amount of food which correspond to a dog's weight. I suggest you go by that guide at first, and then adjust it by adding more or less depending on how quickly your dog eats it up. If your dog chows it down in less than 15 minutes, he/she might need more food, or to be fed more often each day, as long as his weight isn't over the recommended weight for his breed (your vet can tell you that.) If your dog tends to leave a lot of it over, try feeding him less. My dog is 60 lbs. and I feed him approx. 2 cups of dry food in the morning, and 2 more cups at night, and he even leaves that over sometimes if it's hot out, or if I've given him extra treats that day.

It usually tells you how much to feed your dog on the bag of food based on how much the dog weighs.

Read the back of the dry food bag - it will tell you how much to feed by the weight of your dog and its age.
By the way, hope you are feeding a good dry, not a supermarket brand.
Get a dry dog food that lists meat as the first ingredient and has no corn or fillers.

It depends on his age, activity level, and weight, but most bags of dog food come with feeding instructions printed on the side of the bag. Here's a general guideline:

Start with the guidelines on the bag. If your dog starts getting fat, cut back on the amount. If it gets too skinny, add more.
