i feel the same way. i am female though, but i have to take random drug tests and usually there is a nurse who watches you pee, and for some reason i can just feel her staring a hole through me waiting for me to pee and i freeze up. then she tries to talk to me, i guess to make me more comfortable, and that only makes it worse!

I have the exact same problem. It's called paruresis or shy bladder syndrome, and it affects about 7% of all people. It usually develops after some traumatic or embarrassing (usually bathroom-related) event. Usually people can at least somewhat overcome this through graduated exposure (practicing peeing around people with varying degrees of privacy); this can be done with a therapist, "pee buddy", or any other person/people. If you want a quicker fix, it's possible to go to a urologist and learn to use catheters (don't feel like you have to do this if you're not comfortable with it, though); unfortunately, many doctors do not believe this condition exists, so this may be a struggle. Please visit paruresis.org and join the forums (I happen to be a member there myself), because you can learn so much there and get better answers than you will here. (I know this because I've asked about this problem many times, only to get stupid answers here.) One thing to definitely avoid is the false thinking that you should drink a lot more than usual or use diuretics to force yourself to go, because getting your bladder too full can cause major problems (it's actually possible for your bladder muscles to fail if it gets too full, thus making it impossible to pee on your own; if this happens, the only option is to use a catheter to drain the urine).

Well, I used to have a nervous bladder like you do. One day I was at a strip joint with some friends, and after drinking a lot, I had to go to the bathroom. This bathroom had no enclosed toilets seats. I came back to the table complaining that I couldn't pee because there were no enclosed toilets. Then a friend of mine gave me an advice. It might sound funny, but it worked for me, and might work for you too. He told me to think I have the biggest penis of all.
It is funny, but it works. Also, you can close your eyes and imagine that you are in an enclosed toilet. Just don't pee on other people's feet! =) I hope I helped you out.

Yep. It's called a "shy bladder." I have the same problem. Oh, and to take it one step further, I can't poop anywhere but in my own toilet at home or at my mom's house. You should see me on vacation... it's very uncomfortable! I try my best to find toilets that are only one person. Then I run the water and I can pee. Other than that, I am out of luck. Only extreme pain will make me not care.

I think it all boils down to vulnerability. You are in a very vulnerable state when you're standing around with your pants down and your manly-bits hanging out. Other people could be a potential threat, and so you don't want to urinate while they're around (this is all subconscious). Your instinct is telling you that's not safe. Pretty much you need to find a way to distract yourself and chill out a little bit. Figure out what about other people being around makes you nervous and try to overcome it. Maybe have a friend stand outside the bathroom and sing really bad showtunes to help you out. :P It's all a subconscious thing. Good luck getting over it. I had the same problem, but have overcome it -for the most part-. *l*

Simple is is in your question " when you see other people watching you urinate", you just have to star with placing your mind in a place wher you are alone.

Why are you looking around at the first place you came to uriate, didn't you.
Then take care of your thing and for get all the other's,
Make your mind alalone, dream, of in the bushes, all alone

Sounds like you have more issues than simply being unable to pee when your buds are around. Perhaps you're worried they may see the size of your winkie?

You share this problem with an AMAZING number of people!!!
It comes from anxiety... and you might want to consult a professional. Meantime... keep in mind that you will NOT burst!
You will be able to pee when you must! Have a wonderful week, Gina C.

I REALY DO NOT BLAME YOU. WE SHOULD ALL HAVE PRIVACY WHEN WE ARE ELIMINATING! SO DO NOT
TRY TO MEMICK OTHERS IN WHAT THEIR COMFORT
ZONE IS. YOU USE BETTER TIMING FOR YOURSELF AND GO INTO A STALL WHERE YOU DO THE #2 AND DO THE #1 AS WELL. THANK GOD YOU CAN DO THE #1 NORMALLY! ONE THING FOR SURE THAT WOULD HELP YOU, IS IF YOU STOP DRINKING BEER! THAN YOU WOULD HAVE CONTROLL OF YOUR BLADDER AND NOT THE BEER, DOES NOT THAT MAKE SINCE?

You have a nervous bladder. I had a friend in high school with the same problem, and my boyfriend occasionally has it as well. You are not alone. As for what can be done for it, I really don't know. Talk to your doctor and they may be able to help!
