It is technically illegal to serve alcohol to a minor. That said, provided this is your child and you are serving wine as part of a special dinner and have explained to your child that she can "taste" the wine. There is no one that would have a problem. A typical pour is 4 oz so I would not poor more than an 1 oz (a shot glass). Now don't serve her friends and/or allow her to regularly have wine (even an oz). DA

As long as YOU are comfortable with giving her some wine occassionally, in the privacy of your own home, it shouldn't be an issue. My family always raised my brothers and I with an open-minded attitude towards sampling different foods and beverages and wine was a part of that. My folks had a set of little cordial glasses, about the size of a double shot glass, and that's what they would give us for things like Thanksgiving or other special occassions. They would also only buy the sweeter wines , like Maneshewitz (which is most often purchased by jewish families to use for Passover, I'm told), although I'm not sure I spelled it correctly.
In any case, it never hurt my brothers and I, and I'm certainly no drunken sot because of it. It's just a matter of a little now and then, like special occassions, not all the time with a group of her friends joining in.

Off course, give her a sip every now and then. If you want your daughter to appreciate the taste of wine then by all means. Wine is an acquired taste and in time she will learn to love wine for what it is. I don't know what you Americans have against kids drinking wine at a young age. Wine is harmless because when you teach your children about wine, they will understand that it's not like beer. You don't drink a glass of wine like you would a beer or a coke.

I'm Belgian and I have family in France, I got my first glass of wine when I was 7y old. And if children in America would get the opportunity to start tasting wine at a younger age then 21, it would really benefit the culture around wine. So please, give your daughter the chance to enjoy the wonderfull taste of wine.

You're seriously basing your decision on what a bunch of strangers on the internet are telling you? Or are you just curious as to the wide range of opinion out there?

A couple of times a year with food shouldn't hurt her. With every meal or for an after school pick-me-up, it would be pretty excessive.

If you are in the US, you'll run afoul of all kinds of state laws concerning contributing to the deliquency of a minor. I hope that you don't live in Utah. They really don't appreciate a glass of anything to anybody.

But really, if you have to ask then you truly don't think that it's a good idea.

Why would you want to give your daughter any amount of wine? Half a cup is a lot for an 11 year old. That is not very good judgement on your part .

Hey, go for it. Americans are so uptight when it comes to giving their kids wine. Let's all move to Europe; they are more open minded over there. Not only about giving their kids wine but many more things.

I think it's ok to give a kid a sip so it is not such a mystery, but 11 is too young for her own cup.

i think its okay to give her a TASTE. my parents always let me try stuff, and that made me not need to go out drinking as a teenager, because it was okay to do it at home. 11 is a little young, she may not even like it, just a taste.

wow it's just wine. It barely has any alcohol in it. of course it's okay. as long as she doesn't get drunk. People need to be less uptight about this kind of stuff. It's no big deal.

let her taste it yeah, best place to learn about alcohol is whit your parents, if she knows what it is, and have tried getting a little alcohol(and more when she gets older) is a good thing, as she is less likely to go out and get really drunk and do something stupid when you arent around because she allready had some experience whit alcohol.
