My daughter and I took road trips from Tennessee to colorado every summer. We played Alphabet signs. This is a great game for any age who can know their letters, evern preschoolers.

Starting with the beginning of the alphabet ("A") find a sign with an A on it. First one to get the letter gets it for that sign, and no one else can get that letter from that sign
(now if the sign has TWO letter A's on it, then of course sopmeone else can get an A...such as a sign with "Alabama")

Players call out the letters so that everyone knows who got what off what sign. "A in Alabama"..."B in Burger King" etc.
In case of ties, we agreed that neither of us would get the letter.

Very easy game, first one to Z wins. We also allowed the brands of Cars and in some areas where signs were scarse, we used Lic. Plates.

Funny story: One year on our drive, my daughter (age 8) was killing me at this game. I finally turned around to compliment her on her ability to spot signs from the back seat and get the letters only to discover she had brought along my binoculars and was seeing the signs FAR ahead of me! Had to give her credit! LOL

OH AND
WE made up our own version of "Punch Buggy". Being a parent who was working hard to get violence out of our lives, we went with Love Buggies!
Spot a Volkswagon Bug and get a point. At the end of the day the one with the most wins. Dealerships are not allowed.

My kids look for cars with canoes on top against cars with bicycles on top. Some times motorcycles against school busses.
