I've never had wine before and I really want to try it, but I don't even know where to start. I tried googling it but just came up with a guide to what kinds of wine there are - not what is best to start with. Any ideas? Or even a wine most people like?

Wine varies dramatically depending on how it is made.

There are dry wines, fruity wines, sweet wines...what people like is subjective.

I like a varietal wine, meaning that the entire wine is produced from a specific type of grape, such as a chardonnay or Cabernet or Merlot.

Also, wine benefits from aging. For most reds they are best if served when about 7+ years of age. Whites need to be consumed much earlier, they start to go down hill after about 4-5 years.

I'd say the most popular would be a chardonnay. Chardonnay will vary dramatically over the different producers. Not all will taste the same.

Arbor mist is good, but you might as well drink a soda, to my understanding you want to try real wine. Start with a white wine. Reisling is good, it has a hint of sweetness. Chardonay is also good to start with or a White Merlot, very awsome! Stay away from any bottle that says "Dry" they are not as sweet. Drink chilled, almost ice cold in the summertime, and never add ice to your wine. You can also try a Sangria, not pure wine though.

Start with something not as strong like an Arbor Mist before you buy an expensive bottle. If you don't like arbor mist, you won't like the 'real' stuff.
