The part time Army is the National Guard or Army Reserve.
While you enlist for a contract which sends you to basic and AIT training for as long as six months, the rest of the time is done one weekend a month and two weeks every year. However the Guard and Reserve are the primary back fill for the Active Army in Iraq and Afghanistan. That means depending on your military specialty and the unit you are assigned to, you could be called up to active duty and shipped to one of these places.
So the moral of the story is, take joining any branch of the Armed Forces, whether active or reserve as serious business. You take an oath to serve at the discretion of the Commander and Chief and if he needs you he will call you up.
I spent a long career in the Military and found it to be exactly what I needed in life. It had the structure I needed, it sent me to places I would never have seen if I had stayed a civilian, but it also ruined several marriages, and relationships because of the instant deployments and the unknown factors of being in the military. I just caution you to take it very seriously and to have everything promised to you put in writing, because it does not exist if it is not in your contract.

If you are considering the reserves or national guard consider the fact that if you are mobilized you are no longer part time, but a full time member. In today's military environment this is a very real chance.

i joined when i was 30 and for me it wa easy except as older people we are somewhat set in our ways and have to learn to completely forget the ways we were taught, and as older people we have to learn to follow orders even as reserves or guard the life we knew is changed if your not in shape you will have to get that way and stay there the best thing i can say is just be careful you don't heal as fast as you did as a child.

I never heard of part time soldiers.
Join the Guard or Reserves..
