You could try Ebay or consignment, or you could get an auctioneer to sell it for you.
If you like the piece and it's just too much, you might try reworking the situation.
Move something out of the room so it fits better. Instead of a buffet piece, for example, you might be able to carve a passthrough window with a nice wide "sill" to rest food on...perfectly situated between the kitchen and the dining room.
Have it sawn in half and trimmed from the middle, then reattached. It will be smaller and work better in the space. Remove a couple chairs but store them for spare parts or replacements.
You could actually meld the two ideas together and save the pieces removed from the table, and use them to trim out the passthrough, then you have a perfectly coordinated piece of furniture for the room.

Your local newspapers classified section, ebay, make fliers with a picture and place in supermarkets (on their for sale boards), put it outside of your house with a for sale sign on it with the amount you are asking (I would do it on a day that you are home though), have a yard or garage sale.
