I adopted a 7 year old dalmation from a shelter, and they told me she was fixed, but she just went into heat, I think. She started bleeding a little, but is otherwise normal. I was just wondering can a dog that is fixed still go into heat? I've never had a dog before, so sorry if this question sounds stupid, I just really don't know. Thanks for all your help.

If you were told she is spayed and she is bleeding take her to a vet. She may have an infection or internal injury that is causing bleeding. It would be very uncommon for a shelter to let a dog go that was not spayed unless it was a surrender that they were told was spayed and there was some sort of scarring in the right area but it was not actually spayed.
If the ovaries are not removed with a spay which almost always they are there can be outward signs of a heat, but with no uterus there should be no bleeding.
I would call the shelter where you got her from too. They may even have her in to see their vet for free if she was adopted out as spayed. If they find indeed she is in heat they may well spay her for you free of charge if you were unintentionally mislead.

this is the problem I find with getting dogs from the shelter they often give incorrect information.
When they spay a dog they remove all the reproductive organs so there is nothing left to make her go into heat.
A heat will last 21 days and she will likely go into heat every 6 months. make sure you keep a very close eye on her until the heat is over. I would notify the shelter and see if they can spay her or if they would at least give a discount at a vets.
This would be best done anytime after about 28 days from when her heat started( a lot of vets don't like to do it during the heat as the blood vessels are larger and more complicated and slightly more dangerous.
Good Luck

A fixed dog can not go into heat- that's for sure. Your dog could be suffering from something else- contact your local vet- just to be on the safe side. Or the shelter could be wrong and the dog's not spayed- since this is your first dog it may be hard to tell. I would take the dog to a vet.Hope this helps... and your dog gets better!!!!!

I have heard of shelters saying a dog is spayed and it turns out she isn't later on. So it is possible this happened. If not, then I would be concerned with the bleeding. Either way, just take her to a regular vet and have her checked out and possibly set up a date for a spay if the shelter fibbed to you.

No, a fixed dog will not go into heat. If her vulva is swollen, then it is a heat cycle and she was not spayed.
If her vulva is not swollen, have her checked for a urinary tract infection. UTIs can produce blood as well.
