Is shy bad? I'm shy and while I wish I wasn't and I fight against it I feel like its part of me. Is it a defect?

It is not a defect, it is a part of who you are. But extreme shyness is not good; it doesn't have to hold you back in life, however. If you plan to be a lawyer, it will help for you to learn to be more assertive and outgoing. Social skills and confidence can be learned and improved. Try reading “Get Anyone to Do Anything” by David J. Lieberman. It should be in your college library.

VH1 Has a reality show called “The Pickup Artist” hosted by “Mr. E’, where shy guys are taught to overcome their fears of social interaction and pick up girls in the clubs, and get advanced or eliminated based on how they progress. You might want to watch it sometime.

PS: "Psychology Today" magazine (Aug. 2007) suggested that joining "Toastmasters" is a good way of building confidence.

I'm quite shy too, and no, I don't regard it as a defect. Like you, I think it's part of who I am.

A lot of girls, including myself, prefer shy guys as opposed to confident ones. They're more mysterious and seem more sensitive and intelligent. I, as I'm sure a lot of others do, find shyness endearing and cute.

Though it can get in the way of some things, I favour shy over arrogant, imposing, over-confident and cocky.
