I've noticed the phrase excuse me is no longer taught to our young people!

Some wonder where Modesty went, I'm more curious where the manners went?

Did not mean to make it sound as if all young people have no manners, some are very respectful, most ain't.

I live in S.E. Kansas, some call it the heart land!

I'm 43 and always hold doors if its appropriate.

Thanks Poseidon!

We raised our kids with manners and modesty yet they are rather rude most of the time and the cloths they elect to wear makes me want to lock them in their rooms!

I was just curious, and I am overwhelmed by the response I received on this question!

Thank you all!

Omg...what a question. I held the door yesterday for an older man with two arm braces (the kind that help you walk?) at the umm....adult toy store. That is honestly the last time I held the door open for someone. I was there with my husband and we are two consenting adults. :) :) :) :)
Oh, I totally lied to you-I've opened the door for my dog about 10 times today.

Excuse me? I am a teenager, and I use my manners, thank you very much! I'm sorry if that was a bit rude, but I get frustrated when people say that all young people are unable to use manners.

As a matter of fact, I held the door for someone earlier today as I left the Shell station. I always hold the door when I leave somewhere. It's not like it's an inconvenience to do, and even if it was, I would still try to hold the door for at least one person.

If you'd like to know, I use "Please," "Thank you," "You're welcome," "Excuse me," "Yes ma'am/No sir," and "Gesundheit." I do understand that Manners and Modesty are lost arts, sir, but that doesn't mean that some of us haven't learned them.

Whens the last time you held a door for a complete stranger?

Yesterday...

Some wonder where Modesty went, I'm more curious where the manners went?

Manners are alive and well in my corner of the world.. People around here routinely say "Please", Thank You", Excuse Me" etc.

The town I live in is a tourist town during the summer months I do notice some shocked faces amongst the tourists when we hold doors or say "Excuse me" when passing in front of someone in the grocery store aisles... Some tourists even seem somewhat frightened by manners, it often makes me wonder how long it's been since they saw someone with manners ...

I have taught my children since birth to use proper manners gently reminding them along the way trying to make manners second nature to them..

My son especially has gained from using proper manners, I can't tell you the number of girls who fawn over him because he opens doors for them... In June my son went to Reno to escort a friends daughter to prom.. (She needed a date she and her intended date broke up the week before prom she asked my son to escort her as they are friends and she didn't want to miss the night.) My son opened the car doors opened the venue doors and showed his best proper manners all evening escorting her... His date reported she has several friends who have asked for my sons number as they were all very impressed by his manners and want a "Date like him."

Imagine my surprise when my 17 yr old son said "Mom you were right proper manners are a girl magnet." LOL

I was raised to do it but sometimes i am selfish and don't
I do like to think im a good person and that i always hold the door but the truth is that the worlds gotten a worse place and most people don't do it for people other than old people and mothers and stuff

its a cruel world and just opening a door makes me fell actually a lil better...

My parents have taught my siblings and me manners. We are told to always say "Yes Ma'am" or "Yes Sir" and are told it is polite to hold doors for anybody, be they younger or older. I held the door for a few people yesterday, and one of the guys in my youth group opened the door for me. A lot of teens anymore do not have manners, but there is still some hope for the rest of us. As for modesty, we have been taught that too.

I hold the doors open for people almost every day. Even for men.

The only time I can really remember people being rude about holding the door, was when I was in Venice, Italy on one of the boats. I was holding the door open, and not one of the men offered to hold it for me and I stood there while about 20 people went through the door. Not one of them acknowledged me or said thank you. And everyone said the French were rude. I didn't have any problems in France other than being pinched on the butt and kissed on the cheek by total strangers.

I am a 22 year old man and it pains me to see your words. I practice honor and respect for my elders on a constant and daily basis. I care for my grandparents who live nearby, I also value their input on many of life's matters. I do not falter in holding open doors for other people and do my best to be kind and respectful. When I make a mistake I will offer my apology or when I run into someone I will often excuse myself for doing so. To say that youth have not been taught respect, modesty, or honor, I must disagree. My parents are great people and they raised me to be who I am today. My brother and my sisters are both respectful kind people as well, so are many of my friends.

If your focusing on a single experience where a young person has done you wrong I ask that you seek out when a young person does something polite and correct in both respect and virtue. We are not nearly as terrible as many believe and if you took time to introduce yourself I am sure that 9 out of 10 times you will be treated honorably.

I thank you for listening to me and hope you consider looking into the proper members of my generation.

Hails,
Silence

I hold the door all the time, for strangers. I was brought up with my manners and respect for myself and others. I have noticed that it is not just young people who seem to be lacking in these qualities. If you look around there are alot of older folk that seem to have forgotten their manners as well. I say your welcome when people don't say thank you for holding the door. The funny thing is that people don't like being called up on the lack of manners they exhibit.

I held it open for a woman just today. I try to do it for ppl that I see need an extra set of hands ex. baby carriage, older ppl, person with too many packages! Manners are still around it all depends on who you meet. I had a guy sneeze all over me the other day on the bus and he didn't even say excuse me..goes without saying it is how your parents brought you up and when I have kids I plan on helping guide them along to be considerate, compassionate and be respectful.

I read an article on Yahoo! a few weeks ago. After a six month world-wide survey, Americans are the second rudest nation on Earth, just behind Northern Ireland.

And I held a door for a lady this morning when I went into Walgreens.

Just the other day, I was leaving a restaurant and held the door for an older couple! People really should learn some manners! I am 27 and know I have some!
