I thought that if your car was over a certain year it did not need state inspection. I am about to purchase a 1989 Suburban and I wanted to know did it need inspected.

Generally, if your state requires an inspection, only cars that are purchased new from a dealer don't need inspected, as the belief is a car that's brand new should be running correctly. All other vehicles require inspection. Very old cars, prior to emissions requirements, may in special cases be exempt from emissions testing, but an 89 Suburban wouldn't qualify. That puppy needs to be inspected within the prescribed timeframe.

Some states don't have any type of motor vehicle inspections (Kentucky), while some may have safety and/or emissions inspections (Virginia doesn't require emissions inspections in rural areas), and some may reduce or eliminate the need for one or both types, if your vehicle is so-called historic/antique or before a certain year. However, generally speaking, any vehicle with a catalytic converter - - as yours does - - is most likely subject to one or both types of inspections, regardless of age.

Yes your car needs an inspection, no mater what year it is! Depending on what state you live in it may be exempt from the emissions part of the inspection. It is over 25 years here in NY. In loo of the emissions testing on older vehicles, they still do a "Safety Inspection" of the brakes, lights, horn, wipers, structure, tires etc.
Either way, you 1989 would not be exempt do to it's (lake of) age.

Here in NY State, every vehicle licensed to drive on the road must be inspected.
