I'm reading "Joseph Smith, Rough Stone Rolling", and it seems like on a very regular basis people in the congregation see angels, and speak in tongues.

Black Death, the book starts out somewhat slow, but it does have some great information in there. At times the book incriminates the church and at other times it's even a little too pro-mormon. But, it's surprisingly objective for having an active mormon as the author.

That's what they claim in the MTC. They work hard at learning a language, and then after using there own intellegents to master it, they blaim god for granting them the gift of tongues.

BTW, I'm borrowing that book from my cousin, just got it yesterday.

We don't talk about it much. Speaking in tongues is a gift of God, and this gift is given for a specific purpose. When Peter spoke in tongues on the Day of Pentecost it was so that the large gathering of people from diverse nations could hear the gospel preached in their native tongue. It still happens that someone will get up and address a congregation and speak a language that the speaker has never studied, and the congregation will understand him plainly in their native language. Or a missionary will suddenly speak fluently in a foreign tongue so that the listener will really understand, and then the missionary will lapse back into his broken language skills. Such experiences may be sacred to the individuals involved, and as such are not often shared. I believe it happens a lot more than you would think.

We believe speaking in tongues is a spiritual gift, also a gift that would have a purpose. Not just getting up in front of people and speaking jibberish. We do not believe that is of God.
In reference to missionaries at the MTC - those who have to learn other languages, some of which are EXTREMELY difficult, usually do so in a matter of weeks and are fluent in the language by the time they go out to their mission place. Is that speaking in tongues? I don't know...I would guess that is just more of a blessing because they are doing the Lord's work.

If you have ever tried to learn a second, or additional language other than your own at the age of 20 years, you would know that it does not come easily. And to be proficient enough in that second language, after studying it for a few short weeks, enough to convince and persuade another person to convert religions, it takes a miracle. Or rather, the gift of tongues spiritually given of God.

God grants the gift. It is up to the person (missionary) to do something with it, (ie study, learn, practice, pray, etc.)

I even have carried out so in the previous yet i found out quicker or later that there is a difference between no longer having words for a definite adventure and desirous to talk it besides and the present of tongues. i've got seen the present artwork, whilst somebody will talk (oftentimes in spontaneous Hebrew) and somebody else in the congregation will then get the translation and share it out loud. No interpretation ability it became purely your very own loss for words in the face of an overpowering non secular connection. i will grant 2 very own money owed (I even have MANY extra) for the veracity of this present. First, myself. I even have at situations spoken some thing out in my very own prayer time and later have written it down phonetically and study it. That one in specific became Hebrew - "Barcuh HaShem..." all of it began. and that i do no longer understand Hebrew myself. 2d, my chum Sarah. She became in Romania vacationing with a Christian drama production. After the coach, a woman got here up desiring her to wish, yet neither spoke the different's language. I even have many money owed from different previous acquaintances that Sarah at recent starts conversing completely fluently in the female's language. They pray and he or she is going on her way. To this present day, Sarah won't be able to talk, and has no recolection of ever conversing, Romanian. I now discover the unstructured charismatic churches do no longer extra healthy the kind of discipline and direction i'm searching for and prefer liturgical worship, the place tongues does no longer be suited. yet that does no longer advise I decrease cost it completely. I even have seen many folk that i presumed to be unsuitable, unknowingly production some thing. yet I even have additionally seen some genuine activities that I even have yet to work out an decision rationalization for....

apostolic pentecostals do. but not mormons so much. they believe that speaking in tongues is learning another language in like 6 months fluiently as opposed to learning it in 2 years or something. not true. tongues is instant. and then most the time you dont even know that language after you are done.

we still believe the day of pentecost still happens today. as God does not change and said it is for everyone.
