Beagles are notorious for running off when not on a leash.. Mine was 5 yrs old when I got him.. and had never been allowed off leash.. I was able to keep him with me off leash ONLY if I was paying attention to him every second.. if he caught a scent he'd be off.. so anytime he'd start sniffing I'd distract him.. but if you are walking the dog in public, this is not a good idea.. (I was in the yard),..

hounds do not do well off leash.. even electric fences don't work.. once they catch a scent they are in hunt mode.. they become single minded.. they won't notice the car coming at them, the shock from an electric fence, the frantic yelling of the owner.. they notice the scent and follow.. and then they either find what they were looking for, or find a new scent to follow..

Sorry, you shouldn't have gotten a dog if you didn't want to put a leash on him. You will need about 5 maybe a little less months training on hime to where he can reliably follow you in a heel. he'll also need to lear come, stay, and drop(a really fast, wherever you are lay down.) Those commands could save his life someday. I don't understand whats wrong with holding a leash though, are you that lazy? Or do you want the perfect dog who just heels off leash? Try obedience school, and work really hard, give lots of praise, and work WITH a leash at first. I hope this helped.

Practice with him inside your home with treats. Say, "Come here Fido!" (whatever his name is, lol), and then when he does, give him a treat! Be consistant about it. Once he starts doing it ALL the time, start only giving him a treat every other time. Then maybe every few times. Once it gets to a point that he ALWAYS comes to you because he might get a treat, you'll probably do better outside.

It's a good thing for your dog to know how to walk on a leash too though, in case you need to take him out in public. Practice with a leash whenever you get a chance--maybe make it a special thing to go out on a walk down the road and then only let him off the leash when he stays around your house. He should eventually be able to distinguish between the two and will stay around home when you let him out to go potty.

Good luck!

Oh, and one last piece of advice---whatever you do, DON'T chase him around outside! I made that mistake when I got my first puppy and it has taken me TWO years to get him to a point where I can let him outside without a leash! He used to take off like mad. Just warning you :)

Well, red up to make sure this puppy is old enough for socialization. I'm not sure where you live, but in many parts of canada it's a law to walk your dog on a leash. You can get a very long one so your puppy is free to roam around. Keep a close eye on him if you let him off the leash, and make sure he's properly trained so if you call his name, he'll come.

You'll want to use the leash until you get him trained. Of course, I have a 14 year old Beagle who I have yet to fully train to follow me when she's off leash, so good luck!!

You really should keep a leash on him at all times when outside. Even when he is old enough and you think he is fully trained to stay around, a beagle will always follow their nose if they catch a scent.

If he is so small you are worried about a leash.. he isn't going to run off looking for a rabbit.

Either take the leash like a loving pet owner should or if he is so lil just keep his attention and make sure that you keep your focus on him. That way he don't make it to the forrest.

It doesnt matter how big or small a dog is, a leash is always necessary. No matter what.
