No, nor is he being trendy or cute.
Some people wear casual footwear to formal events because they have orthopedic problems and formal shoes may cause them great pain or possibly, getting to that wedding in a suit and bringing a gift took every last nickel they had and they couldn't afford dress shoes.

From what I heard, tennis shoes and suits are all the rage. Let's say this, at least he wore BLACK tennis instead of a very obvious color like red or orange.

I think that is not cool cuz u should dress nice to a wedding but if he didnt have the money for dress shoes then it would be okay.

I personally do it (I even war wallet chains with black suits) to go to party. But God, not for a wedding. I think it's a bit disrespectful.

i don't know, did it look cool? did he pull it off, like a super well-paid rapper, or did it look stupid and unfinished and like he should have worn dress shoes? that'd be how i'd determine my answer.
