how much oil will be needed? The book says 30pints(15 Qts) but you can't drain the torque converter, right.. How much oil should I expect to replace along with the filter.

About 7 liters (think that is like 8qts, sorry I'm Canadian)

You can drain it on that model...

You can do like Ford man and have it flushed for the $125 or drain your pan like you normally do, change your filter, resecure your pan.. under there is a rubber plug to the front of the pan, pull it and turn the crankshaft over with a ratchet and a 18 or 19 mm socket if I remember... after all that turning you will see a 7/16s bolt, unscrew that and all the fluid will come out of the torque converter (but REEEEAAAALLLL SLLLLOOOOWWW)

It will take a good 45min-1 hour for it to fully drain at max..I think it's usually 30 minutes for it to stop dripping completely...

fill the transmission with 4 qts of Mercon V start it up and slowly fill with about another 7 qts of Mercon V.... Depending upon the transmission, the 4r70w takes 12.5, the 4r100 takes 15qts...

But usually at 12qts, I'm pulling my dipstick, runnign the truck through all the gears while having my foot on the brake and keep adding till I'm in the cross hairs with the truck warmed up.

the non torque convertor drain (2003 and laters) are basically 5-6 qts in the pan..

As a suggestion, take the truck to one of those instant oild change places and make an appointment to have the transmission fluid changed. They have power equipment that will flush out all the old fluid including the torque converter. It is so much easier to do, the cost is about 100-125 for them to do it. But they will show you when the old fluid is out and then you can see the new fluid starting to come out. Then you know for sure that it is completely done. Well worth it.

if you don't find that torque converter drain plug, check this out:

if you do go to a shop for a trans flush, insist that they first drop the pan and change the filter

There should be a drain plug on the converter. If so, then close to 15qts.
