When my younger brother went into his room today to check up on my hamster, he found that my hamster was dead. He (my hamster) had been fine when we checked on him just a few hours before. He was eating normally, drinking plenty of water and was active as always. I checked to see if he could have choked but I couldn’t feel anything lodged in his throat. There was nothing he could have hurt himself on in the cage and when he was found he was laying on his back under his log house. He was a Chinese Hamster, and was about 2 ½ years old. Chinese hamsters are supposed to live between 2-3 years so is it possible he just died of old age or was it something I did?

Yup, old age
Don't beat yourself up like it was your fault
When you lose a pet you always think that if I would have done this or that, then my pet would still be alive, but that's not true. Mr hamster was older and just wanted to go across rainbow bridge

I also had a weird hamster death. He was as happy as could be. He ran a lot, ate, drank, and never even bit me. The one day i couldn't see him. He was dead. I couldn't think of any answers to this though. Hamsters are fragile little creatures, so who knows. They don't live long anyway. They could've been sick i suppose.

Its the age. I also have a Chinese Hamster. Once they get so old they can end up dying in their sleep or just while their walking, eating or drinking.

Yeah, you have taken great care of him, especially for him to have lived that long. Most people kill of hamsters pretty easily, and don't care too much about them since they are so cheap. But great job with the hamster, he probably passed away of old age. So sorry. As mentioned, have a funeral for him and bury him. He deserves it =)

at that age it could go at any time. They have diseases we don't even know they have. It had an average lifespan for a small rodent. Next time get a Syrian hamster, the biggest one, they live 2-3 years.

Probably died of natural causes. He was old you know. Living on borrowed time - that;s the main disadvantage of keeping hamsters - you love them and they die after 2 years.

Sounds like the little guy just died of Old Age.

It is possible he had a heart attack or stroke. Not related to anything you did. Like people, these things just happen. It sounds like he did not suffer either.

Do not beat yourself up over it. The fact that he lived for so long means that you did a really great job taking care of him, way to go.

I would suggest having a little funeral for him, and burrying him.

I am sorry for your loss.

It sounds like old age to me. That's actually pretty old for a hamster.

Mice, Hamsters, and other types of small rodents can sometimes die for no reason.

Most deaths are attributed to being in a certain size of cage.
