There is no role for iodine in cancer prevention. Iodine is very toxic in relatively small amounts. Humans need only trace amounts of iodine and in the US that amount is easily obtained via the large amounts of salt consumed in the average American diet. Radioactive forms of iodine are used to treat several types of cancer, primarily thyroid cancers, but this is done by a radiation oncologist and not by an individual. The only safe source of iodine supplementation that I am aware of is by taking kelp tablets and too many of them can easily throw your thyroid function off kilter.

Do some research, get all the facts you need and share this information with your mom. You can find books at the library on how to be a healthy vegetarian- show your mom that you've taken the time to read up on this and prove to her that you are eating in a healthy fashion. It's pretty simple!
