i have a JVC LCD 32" TV which is now about 4 years old and a couple of days ago when i turned it on i could only hear the sound but no picture.
when i go to menu and reset the tv the picture will come back on and everything will be fine, but when i switch the tv to standby or off at the wall, the next time i use the tv the same things happens again.
I have gone through this process 4 times so far with the same results.(warrenty has now expired)

I have contacted JVC and they agree it is only a small problem but my nearest JVC engineer is 50 miles away and wants £60 call out charge with a further £60 for estimate that,s taken off should i agree to the repair.

i,m asking if anyone knows what the problem is, and will it be viable for me to purchase the part required and fit it myself. I am more than capable of soldering on a chip or replacing the part.
(thanks to all that answer)

To be perfectly honest, for the sake of £120 its worth buying a new tv, claim on insurance? Get a new tv, look on ebay etc, you can get the same size pretty cheap , but if you rather keep it and do the part yourself , then find out what part from ringing them? And buy it on the internet or direct from JVC , if you can solder then you will be fine.
Good luck with the repairs :D

OK, let's figure this out.

u turn it on and no pic - but u can get audio and a menu on it.
that means everything from the video ckt forward is OK.
deflection ckt, most low volts, audio, input, tuner, etc.

If u go to the menu and back out without doing anything, what happens?

go to your menu and note any relative settings.
specifically for picture, video, etc.
then reset and look at those settings again.
what changed?

before u turn it off look at them again. anything different?

that either points to the setting ckts, the remote, or your fingers.

If nothing has changed there, then I would look at the the backlight and backlight power supply.

Look closely at the screen, shine a light onto it. If the backlight is out u will still see some kind of image.

I'm guessing that is where it is. U may be able to replace that or the power supply - more probably the light. It is probably a florescent bulb and u can relate to those having a hard time starting, right?

If no hint of a pic then the power on reset circuits. For that u need a schematic. now u have a problem which u probably can't resolve depending on your technical skills and schematic availability.

When u have all that info documented go to this newsgroup "sci.electronic.repairs" and post a request for help.
include make model and all troubleshooting u have done.
If u are sure it is in the backlight u can trim the info to that.
