Religous peoples of all kinds routinely create and establish hospitals. They lead humanitarian efforts. They create organizations such as good will and salvation army which exist simply to help the poor. They create shelters, missions and orphanges.

They build water wells in africa and around the world. They create schools in impoverished nations. But most importantly the most basic and universal teaching is for people to love each other and try to help each other.

My religion, KNITTING, helps the world by providing solace to its practitioners and a creative outlet. The miracle is prevention/cure of arthritis in the hands, and the side benefits are lovely articles to give away, such as blankets, sweaters, scarves, and hats.

Knitting is a great religion! There are no arguments, dogma, schism, or wars associated with it. Both sexes can do it, and you don't even have to be good at it to enjoy it a lot. It is not expensive to practice; a ball of yarn and pair of needles can be worked just about anywhere, even in the dark.

What's more, it produces value. The baby booties or specialty purse I make is of greater use and value than the yarn was when I started, which makes me feel good.

No animals have to be killed, nobody has to suffer, and everybody wins when people knit. It generates a happy, peaceful state in both the knitter and anyone watching.

I love to knit, and teaching knitting is fun, too. People ask to learn, they don't have to be proselytized at all. There are lots of correct ways to do it, so there's no judgmentalism. Knitting is the best religion I've ever found. It is great to do alone, and even better to do it in groups. It works well with all kinds of people, too. It isn't necessary to speak the same language, like the same music, or be the same sex to enjoy knitting together.

While I call myself a Christian, I try to break away from the mandates of an organized religion and follow the examples of Jesus Christ when he was on this Earth by helping the oppressed and spending time with those that others have deemed "socially unacceptable". I think some Christians are hypocritical and have placed too much emphasis on being judgmental of sins that they are too "holy" to commit themselves. Jesus says that all sins are the same and only he is to judge, so I find myself trying to focus on loving and accepting everyone and helping those who are unable to help themselves instead of judging them. There are many other people who practice this (what is also called Liberation Theology) and are apart of groups and organizations that bring awareness to groups of oppressed peoples and try to help their specific situations. I think that whether or not people want to believe in Jesus Christ, the basis of social action and fighting for equality of the oppressed are the same of which he taught and practiced himself.

Wow, people don't read the questions do they! As for the statement that atheists devote their time to science and inventing things, many Christians are also scientists and inventors! No, they may not waste their time trying to use science to explain the origins of the world, but what does that really DO for anyone anyway! Many Christian (and non-christian) scientists devote their time to finding ways to heal the sick or feed the hungry...religion (or the lack thereof) has nothing to do with it!

If people followed the teachings of Christ, they would focus all their attentions on loving other people INCLUDING people that hate them, speak out against them. If EVERYONE loved their enemies, the world WOULD be a much better place. If everyone gave just 10% of their income and 10% of their time to doing the "Lord's work" (helping the less fortunate), we would be able to end hunger, provide health care for everyone in the world, and end war for all time (you don't go to war with people you love).

Unfortunately, everyone doesn't following the teachings of Christ...they hate their enemies and make war with them. They feel compelled to spend their money and time not on helping others but on punishing others for not believing as they do. The government wastes BILLIONS of dollars trying to legislate morality (e.g., prosecuting polygamists), locking up people who hurt no one but themselves (e.g., pot smokers), and more.

If everyone following the teachings of Christ as I understand them, they would focus on themselves and their family and leave the rest of the world up to him...and the world would be a MUCH better place if people would just get out of other people's lives! No, this doesn't preclude sharing your faith with others, but if everyone believed, that woudn't be an issue...and even if everyone didn't believe, the bible would still command those that did to leave the non-believers to him!

Our Denomination has sent out missionary's to many parts of the world and set up medical clinics, schools, we help in the construction of wells for many people in drought stricken areas of Africa, and we help to provide a voice for those persecuted people in areas around the world.
In our Church in Grand Prairie Tx, we send a Bus to downtown Ft. Worth twice a Month and bring them to Church and feed them with food donated by our congregation.

Atheists tend to help the world a lot by dedicating their life to science and inventing things like computers and televisions.

My church gets out and helps people who are sick, needs food, things like that. You are to show Godly love and that is kindness and holding out a helping hand when you see it is needed. Through this the door is open for us to talk to the people about the Lord and giveing them what they need to deside for their self's if they want to follow God or not. It is everyones free choice to pick salvation or not. A church most truly live what it teaches if not everything that church does is a waist of time.
