Inwood in upper Manhattan not southwestern Nassau County is a nice affordable neighborhood. It's just north of Washington Heights and is a little more like a working class Bronx neighborhood than a Manhattan neighborhood. The closer to the Hudson River the better the neighborhood.

I used to live in Inwood. I was there for 3.5 years (left a little over a year ago). I thought it was a great neighborhood. The most beautiful parts of the neighborhood are north of Dyckman (200th) St. and west of Broadway, close to Inwood Hill Park. I lived on 207th Street and felt safe there. There's currently a lot of development, some really great new restaurants, a greenmarket, lots of park, the Cloisters (the renaissance art branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art), and some random neat little historical things, too.

I live in Inwood, Manhattan and get tell you its a great place to live and one of the last quasi-affordable neighborhoods altogether.
Its situated from 200th street to the end of the island in the north, river to river. For such a narrow piece of land, it is well served by two subway lines that are easily walkable. You also have two nice parks (Inwood Hill and Ft. Tryon) with the latter containg the Cloisters, an extensiion of the Metropolitan Muesum.
It is mostly dominican working class with a mixture of old-time jews and irish scattered about. Recently, there has been an influx of young couples moving in as it is a nice, relatively safe place to raise a family. People young and old are generally nice to each other.
Downside is that you should try to learn a little spanish as most locals speak it and will help you out if you demonstrate you want to learn their culture. Safety is relative, that is to say, if you are savy and aware of your surroundings, you should be fine.
Its a great place to live. The best and therefor most expensive places to live in Inwood and Washington Heights are on the west side of Broadway. The further east you go of Broadway, the sketchier it gets.

Inwood is next to washington hgts. In the city we go mostly by good blocks and bad blocks, there are some really nice blocks up in inwood and you have the wonderful cloisters right there. I guess I would say yhte area is ok and there are some really great apts there.

No, that would be a part of Long Island. My mom bought her Toyota Rav 4 there. Around the area, is very commercial but then certain parts are quiet and filled with houses. I think the neighborhood is predominately Caucasion but it doesn't come across to be bad.
