I might be wrong, or misunderstood, but God loved Abraham,,, he promised him and his wife a son even though they were old,,,, They waited and waited, but no son,,, so they decided he would sleep with there slave girl to have a son,,,, then afterwards they had there own son,,, isn't this adultry, and an example of him not trusting Gods promise for a son,,, was it even mentioned what God thought of this? or did I get the story wrong????

It is an example of not trusting God and being impatient. People still want instant gratification. God knew this would happen. The angel of the Lord came to Hagar and told her that her child would be a "wild child". Muhammad (and in turn islam) being born of Ishmael's bloodline was not an accident. This I'm sure was part of God's plan for the world, for the End Times, for deceit and for the Antichrist. We were warned from the start. But Abraham learned from this and became a very faithful servant of God.

God Bless.

You've got the story right...when God promised Abram (later Abraham) a son, it was an unconditional promise--no matter what happened, no matter what Abram did, God would give him a son by Sarai (later Sarah). God did exact judgement on the family for not trusting in God's promises; after Hagar (the servant girl) became pregnant, a rift opened between Sarai and Abram, and eventually, Hagar and her son Ishmael were driven out of Abram's home, and ever since, there has been enmity between the two lines (Islam traces its roots back to Ishmael)

you got the story a little wrong, they did pray for a son even though they were older, and they were given a son, isaac was the son of abraham and sarah.
after that, abraham also had a son with his slave hagar, that son was ishmael.
ishmael's children became the arabs, isaac's children became the jews.
so it's not an example of them not trusting god to give them a son, although they were skeptical at first. and it wasn't considered adultery to have a son with your slaves, it was more like polygamy.
in any case, the law against adultery came from the 10 commandments, which were given at a much later time than abraham lived.

Actually, he did more than sleep with Hagar, he MARRIED her...law and custom at the time allowed men to marry more than one wife. If he had just had sex with her, yes, this would have been adultery...but by marrying her, he made the child (and his relationship with her) legal and legitimate!

...and YES, it was an example of someone not trusting God's promise...and it is a great illustration of "the sin's of the father revisiting themselves on the sons"...the descendents of Abraham continue to fight to this day (and will continue to fight until the end of time) because of Abraham's sin!

Mr. X...you need to read the bible again...Ishmael was born first...there would have been no reason for Abraham to have a son with Hagar if Sarah had already had a son for him!

Polygamy was permitted in the Old Testament, and Sarah gave Hagar to Abraham as a concubine. So what Abraham did was "legal" compared to both what God had revealed to Him and later Mosaic Law. However, if something is both commonly practiced and "legal", that does not necessarily mean it pleases God. Genesis 16:4-5 shows that Sarah soon regretted her action.
And you're right even great men of God still sin, and so we should not lose heart when we sin.
Only God is perfect. Our goal is to strive toward perfection, which we will attain only in Heaven.

They (just as Adam and Eve) were to multiply and fill the Earth, so since they could not conceive, he married Sarah's handmaiden, Hagar, to have children as commanded by God.

Since Hagar was not Jewish, Sarah needed to have a son in order pass down the priesthood rights in Jewish tradition.

Hagar's son Ishmael is the forefather of Muhammad and modern Arab people. Sarah's son Isaac is the forefather of the tribes of Israel and modern Israelites.

God did promise Abraham a son and because of their lack of faith and not trusting God is why we have islam today. The son he had was Ishmael. So it's obvious what thought of it.

at that time no. sara gave haggar to abraham and ishmael was the result of their union. When sarah and abraham had a son, sarah did not want ishmael to inherit and had her driven from camp. their son was then the oldest and only son. haggar was in effect a slave. she was protected by god as was her son. Gen 13;12 to end of chapter describes how ishmael and is descendents would like and react.
