You will be great in Basic since you have no access to alcohol, but AIT may be a challange if you cannot withstand temptation. At my AIT, after the initial phase, there was drinking every weekend. Stay strong and hang out with people at AIT who don't drink. Good Luck!

The Army will give you a solid framework to work within. During basic training you will not have any opportunity to drink, and the physical conditioning will leave you with little energy to do anything except follow the course and survive until the end. So basic is not where I see any real issues.
However, when you leave basic and go to AIT for specialty training, you will have a lot freer environment that will allow you to party once in a while. Be aware that the military does not tolerate drunken behavior very well, and you have to be real careful with your history of excessive drinking. If you let it take over while you are in the Army, you could find yourself kicked out with a bad conduct discharge. So don't look to the Army to fix you. You must do that your self.

Congrats on admitting that you have a problem...That is the first step to making things better for yourself. Basic training will help you dry out and maybe that amount of time sober will be enough to give you a different perspective on your life. AIT may offer you the opportunity to drink when you have limited liberty....you will have to avoid the cues that cause you to drink now. As much as I think of military service as good, I think you might be better off going to AA and a 12 step program or better yet, into rehab before think about joining the Army or any other branch of service. If you go into the the service with a problem you stand a chance of making things a lot worse, and swapping out your present problems with a set of new ones.

well YES! in fact.. its probably better than rehab or anything.
its REALLY hard work mind.
my friend is in the royal marines. which is exactly like an army, but, when he goes to war, he gets dropped off by ships. but i doubt he will go to war.
The army (any type) is strict, and constant. there wont be any time for slagging (OR DRINKING) so it will do you good!
though, obviously, you do get breaks, breaks in a city or town, where most people go out drinking. But, you dont have to stop drinking completely!
anyway. youll be mentally and physically stronger.
you are definatly going about this the right way!! well done you!
your first few weeks of each level (you move up grades) are going to be the hardest. but, force yourself to go through with it, then you can keep on going. the army is a great great life. no matter how long you stick at it.
hope it all goes well for you =D

I say it is worth a try...in the army u will learn discipline and for the most part people realize that they want to be a better person after training. As long as u can continue stayin straight after training then u are good. Also once u get done with training when u get to ur new unit u will have alot of people on ur side to help u stay on the right path.

Congratulations on realizing you have a problem and working on it.
Between now and the time you leave, take one day at a time. It will be hard, but you CAN do it. You will do fine in the Army. What my son did prior to going to basic was spent alot of time with the recruiter. Maybe you could do something like that to stay away from drinking.

as a soldier in the army, no it won't you can't change the way people are mentally. the army changes you physically and adds on to your mental status by preparing you for war. as far as drinking once you get to your unit you will see just how much drinking you are going to do. whats your mos? stay strong at this though and be determined that you are going to be this problem. the army is what you make it so make the best of it good luck

I say GOOD FOR YOU!
Go to the army.
My friend did it... heavily into drugs, quit for a while, then he felt like he was going to relapse, joined the army, and now he's been drug free for 3 or four years.
If you really want to change your life around, you have 150% support coming from this direction.
I wish you the best of luck, and hope everything goes well.

The military s not n business to rehabilitate alcoholics or those with mental disorders. More than likely you will not be allowed to join. If you lie to get in and they find it to be a pre-existing condition, they may kick you out.
I'd suggest AA. I have an uncle and cousin who are alcoholics (apparently it never goes away) and have been clean for decades. They got their lives back through AA. But the decision is yours. You have to do it. Nobody can do it for you.
When you get squared away, you might try the military. But you have to be absolutely up-front and honest with them. When you sign application and disclosure forms, you certify the information you have provided is true and complete to the best of your knowledge. Fraud is not a good way to begin a career.
It may not what be what you wanted to hear. But I believe it's pretty accurate.

No! the last think the military need is a wino, but it might stop your posting dumb questions here for a while.
In the military as an alcoholic (and yes thats what you are) you are not only a danger to yourself but to your comrades.
As was suggested you need to declare to yourself you are an alcoholic first, then get into an A.A. programe, as the only person who can help you, is you.
