how can i write in both japanese and english on my computer?

i am in america right now and i wanted to help a friend get japanese on her computer so we can talk back and forth
but i dont know how to download it safely for her
what i want is for her to be able to write in japanese and english on her computer thankyou ^^

Follow these steps:

1) Start->Control Panel->Regional & Language Options
(depending upon your dispay settings in your PC you have to go by above or Start->Control Panel->Date, Time, LanguageOptions->Regional& LanguageOptions)


2) When you click Regional & Langauge options , a new window appears. In that there will be three tabs, Regional Options, Languages and Advanced.


3) Click the Languages Tab.


4) There will be a frame titled 'Supplemental Language Support'. In that there will be two check boxes. If the first one is checked then it means your system has Arabic fonts installed. If not check the box and it will ask for the installation CD to install language files.


5) If you have the installation CD, you just put it and Click OK and then click Apply. If you don't have it, then let me know, insha Allah,will try out alternative methods.


6) After installing, go back to the languages tab. There will frame titled 'Text services and Input Languages',click 'Details' button on the frame.


7) In the new window that appears, there will be a frame named 'Installed Services'. In this click 'Add' button. From the drop-down menu , choose Arabic . This will install the Arabic keyboard.


8)A language bar will appear which you can minimize and have it in your task bar. And whenever you wish to switch between input language you can choose left Alt+ left shift. This will switch between the keyboards.

On-Screen Keyboard

After installing the keyboard, you may find difficulty in identifying the alphabets. Windows XP has an option that gives you the keyboard layout.

Start->Programs->Accessories->Accessibility->On-screen keyboard

This on-screen keyboard will automatically change b/w english and Arabic as you switch using left alt+left shift.

My Japanese teacher said you can change the language to be able to write in Japanese on the computer, but I haven't gotten taht to work yet. The way our school's computers do it is with a program they bought. You type in romaji, then change it to hiragana, katakana, or kanji. I don't know the name of the program though, sorry!
