I come from a musical family and loved Country and Flamenco at the time (1956) that I learned to play. It was a challenge to conquer because I knew it could be my prime source for a living if I chose it to be.

Further, as another poster has said, it serves as therapy and a means by which I can unwind and also express creativity. When I pick up a guitar I automatically play something of my creation blended with the hundreds of songs already in my mind.

Additionally, it is a God-given talent and I intend to keep playing and sharing what I know with the younger generations.

Note: A thumbs-down? Why? This response is not controversial to the question. What is there to disagree about?

That's a good question. And one that most guitarists don't spend a lot of time thinking about. I fell in love with the sound of the instrument and I stopped asking why. I just know that if I don't play for a day, I feel like something's missing in my life.

The thing that started me off was a girl. I heard a girl play a great tune and maybe in the back of my mind, I thought, "If I could play guitar, it would get me girls." So far, it's working real good!

It's something that I've loved since childhood, my father played the jazz clubs in Philly, and as I was growing up that's all that I remember hearing. Then one day he brought home a classical guitar record and I went nuts, that sound just blew my mind and I knew that I had to make that sound, I loved it from day one, It's weird but I had to play, it's given me comfort when I'm down, if your depressed all you have to do is go play for two hours and you forget all about being down, playing brings you up, and when you finish a piece that you've been working on it's such a feeling of accomplishment. I'm never bored, there's always something to learn when you play music, a new song, a new technique, it's the best thing that I've ever done in my life, and it's something that I'll love till my dying day !!!!!!!!

Piano is my first instrument. But I learned guitar so I could take one along with me when I go to parties, or get-together on the boat, etc. Everyone always wants to do a singalong- and the guitar is mobile!

First and foremost because it makes me happy. Also because I have friends who are muscians and its fun to be able to join in and play along with them rather than just watch and listen.
