Although unlikely, they can be! Apart from the soreness of the open wounds and the itching of the scabs, herpes is highly contagious but shouldn't cause serious harm. However, with other illnesses, the herpes could become problematic and cause a serious weakening of the body's immune system thus allowing other, more serious, infections to get out of control. Once you have contracted the herpes virus, it can only be controlled and not cured. Also with the strain of herpes that causes cold sores, most people don't worry but it should always be checked if you participate in oral s** as the STI strain of herpes is much more volatile and can create serious problems (such as infertility) if left untreated for too long. If this is your first cold sore , get it checked out to confirm the strain. If it's the common cold sore causing herpes, it can be controlled with over the counter medicines but any other strains may need a course of anti-biotics.

Just be careful you don't touch your lips during the active phase because the virus will be on your fingers and can be transferred. It is especially careful you don't touch near your eyes as it is nasty if it gets in the eyes.

You might be able to prevent reocurrences by taking the herb Lemon balm regularly: Lemon balm tea for instance. Also, when you suspect a cold sore take L-Lysine. Some also take this for prevention. You might also be able to find a chap stick that contains L-Lysine with Alo vera that should help speed up drying.

Hope this helps.
Best wishes.

Yes, cold sores are Herpes simplex 1 or 2. So, you have Herpes; if you want to find out if it's 1 or 2 go to the doc when you have one and they can tell you. The only dirrerance between 1 and 2 is 1 is "usually" on the mouth and 2 is usually on the genital. BUT they can be spread from area to area. Go see a doc and they can give you some antiviral meds to supress the outbreaks!
