I am trying to buy a sink for use with a bathroom vanity but don't know what kind to get. The descriptions for sinks all look the same but the prices vary widely. What is a self-rimming sink? What kind of sink would I need to get to go with a regular bathroom vanity?

i am going to suggest you measure the opening for the sink, then go to a mega store (lowe's or HD) and ask them to explain the differences. once you have that info, then your decision will be easier. price depends on what you can afford to spend.

Prices vary due to materials used (plastic, china, or cast iron etc) and the quality of the sink. Self rimming means it does not have a chrome ring needed to hold it in and seal it. It justs sits on the top of the vanity and is held from underneath by clips. Some just use silicone under the top of the rim. If you plan on staying where you are for a while, get a quality sink that won't give you problems with the finish wearing off easily.

If the following link does not help, go to your Home Depot and see all the different styles that are now available:
