Hi, I have taken an abandoned kitten in and I think she is about five months old now, I was told that she can be spayed at six months and she won't be able to get pregnant untill she is nine months, I have been reading some of the answers regarding cats on yahoo answers and I am now beginning to think I have been given the wrong advice, someone please tell me when she can get pregnant!! I would ask the vet but I am in Sicily and they don't believe in sterilization even though they will do it so I am not getting the right answers from here! I need help before it is too late and I don't want anything bad to happen to Lily! Sue

It's true that she can be spayed as early as 2 lb. or 8 wks. but the only real reason to place such a young kitten at risk is in a shelter situation where you really want them spayed before they go to a new home.
It's true that the average age of the first heat is 6-9 mos. If your cat is indoors I'd get her spayed at 6mos if this is what your vet recommends. That is what I recommend for indoor cats here in the US. There is no reason to do it sooner for an indoor cat. The extra month or two makes anesthesia a little bit safer for them, actually. You don't want to pressure your vet into doing a procedure if they are not comfortable with it.
It is not true that she cannot get pregnant until 9mos. She can get pregnant at her first heat which could be anytime b/t 5 and 12 mos. Nothing bad will happen to her if you wait until 6 mos. to get her spayed. It's not "wrong" advice, it is probably just tinged with the policy of the clinic itself.
Spay her at 6mos. That's what I have been doing with my own cats for years. Good luck.

She can get pregnant when she has her first heat, which could be as early as five months.
If she's going to stay inside, you can wait.
If she's going out at all, you will want to have her spayed now.
Animal rescues often spay and neuter and release feral cats at three months with no repercussions to the animals.
Good luck!

Cats have their first estrus cycle anywhere from 5-7 months. If they turn 5 months in the spring time, they will usually start earlier. If it is summer time (like now) it is usually right around 6 months. If they come of age in the colder months, they will start later, around 7 months.
Cats can be safely spayed as early as 4 months, but it is best to wait until about 5.5 months.

"A cat can be spayed as early as six months"
Out dated advice.
A cat can be spayed as young as 8 weeks provided it is healthy and a healthy weight. In fact, it is better to get a cat spayed before six months because it can go into heat earlier than six months.
"A cat won't be able to get pregnant until she is nine months"
Bad advice
A cat can get pregnant as soon as she goes into her first heat, which can be as early as 4-1/2 months.
The best time to get your kitty spayed is right now.

Around 5 to 6 months is when she should be spayed. If she is going into heat, then she can get pregnant, and that's around the 6 month mark.
I would get her spayed as soon as possible though. In Canada they charge extra if the female has gone into heat already.

Actually, a cat can be spayed when they weight TWO POUNDS... the shelter I volunteer at does it at two pounds, regardless of age. I'm certain a 5 month old weighs at least that!!! :)
Please get her fixed ASAP--you don't want her to go into heat before you can get her fixed for multiple reasons.
Once a cat has had her first heat cycle, her chances of ovarian and breast cancer increases three-fold.... very not good.
and a cat going through heat is miserable--for you as well as her... the yowling, the blood... etc. etc..
and she could get pregnant!! that's the last thing you need :)
Even if she does go into heat (or gets pregnant) you can still get her spayed.. it'll just cost a bit more...
so, yes.. you got bad advice! ;)

The majority of female cats do not go into heat until nine months. Naturally, there is a few rare exceptions. Go get her spayed now. It's fine. It's usually more of a weight issue. She needs to be big enough to handle the surgery. My girl is teeny tiny, so I had to wait extra long for her to reach 4 pounds.

its just silly to fight nature but if you want i think U should REALLY ask a vet. I think they have pills or something not sure since back at my home we let nature take its course and never do anything to animals unless they are sick we try to treat them but every thing else is up to the balance :) anyway don't worry ask a vet. its ur only choice if ur still not sure do nothing and enjoy whatt u have :D so she gives u little kittens :D omg u will love it they are adorable
