Connect the two batteries in series. This means:

Connecting the positive terminal of the 1st battery to the negative terminal of the 2nd battery. This creates 24 volts from the positive terminal of the 2nd battery to the negative terminal of the 1st battery.

The positive terminal of the 2nd battery can then be connected to the positive terminal of your device, and the negative terminal of the 1st battery can be connected to the negative terminal of your device.

You can put storage batteries in series to get 24 volts. Microwave communication sites over the last 50 years have used series batteries to get 48 volts. The problem is in the charging. Normally they have a float charger to keep them topped off when AC power is available. Once every month or two you have to take the batteries off-line and apply an equalizer charge. This is a high current charge at much more that the nominal voltage to insure that each 2 volt cell gets fully charged. Otherwise the slight difference in internal resistance between cells will cause some to hog most of the float charge and when the battery is needed, the dead cells will block the current flow or at least reduce the nominal total voltage. So design your system to allow the batteries to go off-line during these rehab sessions.

If they are wired in series and both batteries are good, there will be 24 volts. Between the positive pole of battery one and the negative pole of battery 2 (with a jumper of course from negative of 1 to positive of 2) you should read 24 volts.

to get voltages to add you hook batteries in series. Take the negative terminal on one battery and hook it to the positive of the other. The left over terminals are the postive and negative terminals of the 24 volt battery

Everybody wrong, you have to put to oscillate the smaller current and feed the primary winding of a transformer ratio 1 :11,32. for each turn in the primary winding with 2,12 V you should have 11,32 turns in the secondary winding to get an outlet of 24 VAC, then if you want 24 VDC, just rectify the 24 VAC through a Weston Bridge and PRESTO you have converted 2,12 VAC to 24 VDC.
Nowadays, this convertion could be digital instead analogic as explained before.
