My step mum is on a new diet and one of the foods recommended is fortified oats. I've asked in Holland and Barrett but they haven't heard of them and after a useless websearch all I've come up with is pet food suppliers. Maybe someone knows of some brand name that makes them that I've just overlooked? My step mum thanks all answerers in advance.

I believe what you want is oats with added (fortified) vitamins and minerals. Complan does one. See http://www.auravita.com/products/AURA/HENZ10632.asp

But I would just give her wholegrain oats (Mornflake) and add things that she can digest and part of her diet, e.g. fruits, fruit juices, liquidised soup, etc. if you can't find the ready fortified thing. It's just as good and cheaper.

P.S. Weetabix also do one:http://www.weetabix.co.uk/brands/seriously-oaty/seriously-oaty-apple-and-raspberry/

Oats are a 100 percent natural product - unlike most breakfast cereals where something like say cornflakes have been found to lack certain vitamins and minerals and has therefore been fortified to correct the imbalance. there is also the problem of many breakfast cereals having more sugar than most puddings.

Oats, in combination with milk , already have an excellent range of vitamins and minerals plus water soluble fibre. (The water soluble fibre is easily absorbed by the blood and lowers cholesterol).

The differences in the milling process produces different textures for your porridge, so each will have a different texture in the mouth.

Traditionally, porridge is boiled with (slightly salted) water and then the milk is added later. Since your step mum is on a new diet - why don't you be as supportive as you can and start your day with the same breakfast - adding a teaspoonful of honey to your porridge will still have less sugar than most cereals!

You don't have to confine oats to porridge - you can add finely ground oats to stews and casseroles to thicken it up. Porridge was a poor man's meal, at one time - people used to slice it up and take it to work for lunch.

Hope this helps
