He has never done this before and he is about 5. It just seemed odd to me.

Well, it's a little odd that he decides to take up the habit after 5 years, but I've seen it before. I wouldn't be too worried, unless he starts acting sick or strange, then I would contact a veterinarian. Until then, just try to keep the litterbox as clean as can be.

Mine like to play and lay in the litter box right after I scoop it. They are fascinated with the scooper. Sometimes, I have to lock them out of the room, just so I can scoop. I don't know why they lay in it after it's been scooped... I scoop twice a day, so maybe it's them saying, "Ahhhh, clean litter box!"

Maybe it's a smell thing, maybe it's cool in there, maybe he likes the feel of litter against his fur.... You can always call the vet first and ask if you should be worried. Personally, I think you're fine. Make him a dark bed out of a box. Maybe he just wants his very own cave?

I have a couple that do it every once in a while. I'm not sure what it's about but I just shoo them out of there.
