I live in Utah so I'm surrounded by LDS people. I am constantly dealing with LDS people and from what I've dealt with they seem like a cult. How do you feel about the LDS religion? Do you think they're a cult? If so, why? If not, why?

I have family members that are LDS and I have been to an LDS church before. I'm not trying to bash anyone here but I do think LDS people are very blind in their beliefs. They believe what they are told by people who have no life experience. They shelter themselves and believe anything they are told by a profit... I think anyone who believes something blindly without question is a member of a cult, mormans believe everything blindly.

Sorry, I spelled PROPHET incorrectly, simple mistake. I'm not religious and I think all religions are equally blind in certain things but the LDS religion is what I'm exposed to the most. I have heard mormans in Utah are much worse than everywhere else and maybe that is why my view of them is so negative. I guess I should have refrazed my question to "do you think all religions are cults?"

The United States Department of State financed a study to determine a working definition of "cult". There are 8 official "warning signs". Mormons have 7 of the 8.
By contrast, Catholics only fit 3.

The word "cult" has been coined as a perjurative epithet to point out groups with "unorthodox" beliefs that other groups and individuals don't agree with. Like somehow calling them "cultists" somehow makes them evil and false. And there are other statements made to separate these groups from the orthodox trintarians or traditionalists which are "not Christian" "another Jesus" or "The Jesus of the Bible" to indicate, for instance, that LDS believe in continuing revelation and that the canon of scripture is not closed and somehow that is evil. That the Bible is the finished revelation and that God would have nothing else to say to men is the only acceptable belief so therefore he LDS would have to worship a different God because they claim to have more knowledge about him. Being different is "bad and false" when every Christian denomination is different so everybody else besides what you believe has to be false, or everybody else who has differing doctrines is a "cult". Somehow it makes the one who accuses right and superior to separate these differing groups and call them "cults".
The word cult actually just means a group who follow a charismatic leader. In that way, christianity itself was a cult. And every other group in every other denomination that was started by a charismatic leader, Martin Luther, for instance, is techically a cult. Islam is a cult, etc.
The main reason for this is to make one group look superior and right and the "cult" and "cultists" evil and wrong.

I have a book called "History of Religion". Mormons are not listed under "cults", but under "Modern Day Movements".
Those listed under "cults" are Jim Jones, David Kourish and I believe the Harry Krishna and Moonies.
Although I do not agree with all the teachings of the Mormons, I do believe that they have strong family values and for the most part try to live their lives as a Christian should. A lot less hypocritical than many other denominations.

We believe in a living prophet of God---
look up the proper word usage of your word "profit."
We are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I don't know what a "morman" is. Check out the proper spelling of Mormon. It's hard to take you seriously as someone who is trying to sound so educated when you have such blaring errors in your comments.

The LDS Church does more good on the earth than any other major religion. I have lived among Mormons all of my life and I have not seen a more generous, caring, giving people who what to help others than the Mormons. If that is being a "cult" then we all should be more "cultish."

They're a religion just like the Catholics and Baptists. But yes, you will have to fight them off because they like to have new members of the religion. I think it's annoying but just tell them nicely you don't want to be Mormon and to please stop contacting you in regards to religion.

I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. If we fit the definition of a cult, fine.
But I can tell you this: I don't wear a bonnet and long dresses ever. I prefer pants and shorts, thank you.
Also, I am not dominated by my husband and am quite able to think for myself. I also do not worship Joseph Smith, but God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. As far as people saying we are not Christian, that's fine. We are not their definition of "Christian" but we are, most definitely, believers in Christ and that He died on the cross for all mankind.
Many lies and misconceptions are told about our "church" but I choose to live the Gospel, which is the same Gospel preached in many other churches.
We also live and work among the people. I do not live in Utah, I live in Kansas. I have also lived in Washington State (native), Idaho and Colorado.
Visit the website www.mormon.org, to find out what we believe, if you don't like it, fine. At least educate yourself.
Tai: P.S., don't be so haughty, I don't believe everything blindly and I would appreciate it if you wouldn't lump me in with "everyone" - you don't know me.

The LDS have very strong convictions, great family values and a rich history.
Only people that really get to know them think they are like a Cult so keep an open mind.
