they are similar but the mechanics of the exercises are not exactly the same so there will be no carry over from one to the other.

push-ups only utilize about 60% of the total bodyweight so in that aspect they do not provide much of a load for increasing functional strength or inducing hypertrophy as the body adapts to them very quickly

They both use triceps and pectorials to move the weight.

Once you master pushups, move onto bench presses :).
