"The earliest Baptist church is traced back to 1609 in Amsterdam, with John Smyth as pastor. The group's embracing of "believer's baptism" became the defining moment which led to the establishment of this first Baptist church. Shortly thereafter, Smyth left the group, and Thomas Helwys took over the leadership, leading the church back to England in 1611. "

Belief-wise the Baptists call their beliefs that set them apart "Baptist Distinctives"
In a nutshell, they are:
Bible is the ultimate source of authority
Priesthood of the believer - each person is responsible before God for their beliefs. And each believer has access to God through Christ.
Religious Liberty- Gov'ts shouldn't tell people how to worship
two ordinances - baptism and Lord's supper are symbolic.
Baptism of believers (not babys) by immersion
Autonomy of the local church

Most Baptist churches have a confession of faith. That sums up what that church believes. Most Southern Baptist churches subscribe to the "Baptist Faith and Message" though there are different editions. They say their ultimate authority is Scripture, not a man-made statement. But the confessions are for convienience and to give people a basic outline of what most baptists believe.

The core belief of the Baptist Church is the Believers Baptism. This is supported in scripture. If you want to do a great study go through the new testament and make a list of how many new believers where Baptists immediately following their conversion verses believers that were never baptised.

Remember baptism is a public profession of faith not a requirement of salvation.

It started as a separatist movement in the. 16th century which was a Protestant movement. However some Baptist maintain they they were never a part of either of these movements but rather existed since the days of Christ.
The Baptist Church in the Us seems to have been independent of these.Roger William from England fled to America in 1631 in 1639 the first Baptist Church was open.
they believe in the Baptism of adults not infants, absolute autonomy, and the Scriptures

As a child, I was born into a baptist household, parents, grandparents and their folks before them......

Never understood what they believed, as each church had a different doctrine and taught such. Everything was "A MYSTERY" in the preachers and deacons vocabularies.....they couldn't explain what they didn't understand either. *sigh*

Thank God for the truth that set me free!
Praise Jah you people!

The founder was Jesus. He had help from some of His Homies.
Keep your eyes on Jesus and things like that won't matter anymore.
