hi.
i have 2 guinea pigs and one is much larger than the other and the larger one likes to eat. but, whenever he puts his hands on the food bowl it tips over and the food spills everywhere. any ideas on how to stop him from doing that?
i dont want to use duck tape because they might get to the sticky stuff and eat it and die. any other suggestions?
thanks

You can get large ceramic bowls which are heavy enough that guinea pigs can not tip them over but they do have a tendency to run through them and basically soil there own food. A person who owns guinea pigs that I know has her pellets in a large ceramic bowl, it works great in that they can not tip it over but every time I go over there is poops and pellets that have been urinated on.

Thus why I turned to a clip on container, they sell them at most exotic vets. Basically you fill it up and they clip on to the wire squares of your cage. Unfortunately I only got 1, when I needed 2. To solve this problem I cut several squares of velcro, 2 per container, I then stuck the velcro to the door. So far both inventions work. I also had a problem with the water bottle, it was impossible to get on and then I would go out to find it had fallen off. To solve this I drilled a hole for the spout, and 2 smaller holes for the wire which I threaded through. It has worked a gem.

Good Luck

Well there is two solutions, one, you need to get him a plain pellet because then he will not have any tasty pieces that he will keep begging for, also pellets with sugary piece in it (seeds, nuts, cereals, treats, colored pieces etc.) are bad for your guinea pig because your guinea pig will only pick out the sugary pieces and he will get obese (which can end up being fatal) also your guinea pig can choke on these pieces (which can also end up being fatal) the next solution is to get a ceramic guinea pig bowl because those bowls are heavy enough that your guinea pig won't be able to tip it over (i know this because i have that kind of bowl for my guinea pigs). Hope this helps!

- Wide ceramic crocks are hard for critters to tip.

- Lock-crocks are great for bowl tippers. They are attached to the wall of the cage. You just twist the bowl to release it from its lock.

- I have used a velcro system to hold down bowls with a lot of luck. You put some on the bottom of the cage and some under the bowl. They can't make the bowl flip, and there is little exposed stickiness. The velcro remains secure enough that they can't get to it to chew on it.

It's simple....Just get a heavier food bowl like a ceramic food bowl. That is what I had to do for my male guinea pig.

Get them a heavier bowl, or one that attaches to the cage. Guinea pigs are playful & probably think it's funny to spill their food. Ours was dislodging his food dish, which hangs on his cage, until I figured out how to fasten it really securely. He still tries to knock it down, lol.

Get a ceramic dish so it can't tip over. Or you can use a ceramic soap dish as a bowl.

Try getting a heavier ceramic bowl--they're made so that they can't be tipped over.

How about buying a lower bowl...one with lower sides. We used a cat dish that was pretty heavy and worked ok.
