The military is not the movie "The Dirty Dozen". It requires mission-oriented, disciplined members to get the job done. Prisoners of all stripes have shown their disdain for the law and their inability to accept discipline and direction.

Well, generally those who receive a life sentence or death sentence are considered extreemly dangerous criminals such as serial killers and the like. We do not want to mix them in with our soldiers, who are in harm's way as it is. Also, we do not want to train these people as a US soldier for a number of reasons:
1. They can commit treason and give information to the enemy.
2. They can become even more destructive killing machines then what they already were.
3. They can steal or smuggle very powerful weapons and sell them on the black market.
Basically, far too much can go wrong if they are allowed to do this. And even if they behave and survive, again these are people we don't want on our streets again which is why they received the life or death sentence in the first place.
I understand where you're coming from on the idea that the criminals need to make themselves more useful however putting them in the military isn't a practical solution.

I've heard people ask this question a lot. But it's pretty simple to answer. For starters they're very likely to desert or even defect to the other side. Secondly they would also probably be a lot more likely than usual to turn around and turn their weapons loose on their comrades in arms. Would you want to be a CO of a company of dudes fresh from death low and life sentences?
A few countries have experimented with this during troubled times. In the last stages of WW2 Germany tried using "penal brigades" and all on the Eastern Front. The number of desertions and defections to the Soviet side was staggering so the Germans had to send a lot of NCO's from regular army units where they were really needed to babysit these guys just to make sure they didn't bolt at the nearest opportunity. It kind of defeated the purpose of starting the penal brigades to begin with. I suspect we would have the same problems today.

Actually, i thought that the US does give the choice to some criminals but i think it depends on their criminal act. Also, sometimes it depends on their age. Personally, the US would have to go under deep investigation on a criminal if they are thinking about giving the choice. Trust from the criminal is very important because if something happens it would be the US to blame. They would have to check the criminals history, family, education, etc. The US will have to go through a lot to make such a choice for just 1 criminal.

the army created this mess, and that i do no longer understand how they're going to sparkling it up. What i do no longer comprehend is why he became redeployed for a 4th time after receiving no longer purely a million, yet 2 very severe wounds. do no longer they regularly deliver you abode after some thing like dropping a foot or taking a foul blow to the techniques like that? We could be in dire want of infantrymen yet i think of this needless to say proves it may be extra effective to have adult adult males who're mentally stable, a minimum of as stable as you're able to nicely be in try against. for that reason it sounds like he became on the sting first of all and then some thing purely led to him to snap, sending him over the sting. Even then the army failed. the section the place he became stationed became extremely risky. infantrymen were killed for wandering around on my own. yet this guy controlled to stroll out the front door of the backside, on my own, with a rifle, walked a number of miles to the city, and commenced going abode to abode killing human beings until eventually now walking all the some time past to the backside the place he became ultimately observed and apprehended. there's no excuse for what got here approximately and no, i do no longer think killing this guy will resolve something. It definitely won't carry back sixteen civilians.

I think your ignorant low opinion of the men and women that wear our uniform and fight for your right to be stupid is offensive. We have an all volunteer military. They are all there because they chose to be there, not because they are the flunkees that couldn't make it a Burger King like you seem to think. All of the branches are extremely selective, they don't take any dummy that walks into the recruiting office. This idea that we should clean out our jails and put them in the Army is an insult to the heroes that wear the uniform, which a lot of them left $50,0000 or more a year careers to go fight for your ***.

Because the Army couldn't trust murdering scum like that in combat.
I think that, if under sentence of death, they should be entitled to volunteer as human guinea pigs for drug testing or medical experimentation. If they survive, it is an act of God and they can go free -- same as if they survived the electric chair. or lethal injection, or gas chamber.

Okay, think about it. You want to give a person like Charles Manson a weapon, and actually assume he would use it on the enemy. Or would he consider his own country his enemy? I mean we did have him locked up for most of his life. If you are thinking"no" don't give them a weapon, these are the same people that can make weapons out of a material we would consider not possible to be deadly. I really don't think it's a good idea.

I don't want a bunch of heavily armed felons running around. But I would be for using them as bait for the bad guys. Just stick them out in the middle of nowhere for the bad guys to target. Then we will know where the bad guys are and take them out.
I could go for that.

Because the friendly fire stats would probably increase unless you dropped them by air into the enemies heart and left them there to fight their way out! Because there aren't enough trees for the officers to hide behind in Iraq! Maybe they can be used as human shields like the israelis do with children!
