Is there any purpose for creating something only to destroy and eternally torture a large portion of it? The majority of mankind would be sent to hell by the bible's definition of a righteous believer, why does god set up the rules in such a way?

mmmmm, trust me, if hell was real, nobody would want to go. To say we send ourselves is a bit like saying the jews sent themselves to the gas ovens during wwii.

Well, i was hoping for a christian answer, but instead of answering the question, they only said we choose it ourselves. I wanted to know WHY god set it up like that, not the end result of it.

Ok spiritual gunslinger, interesting ideas about hell. If you're right then I think I'll gladly go my own way. If your god is real then he is an egocentric sadist. Hell doesn't seem so bad as an eternity in blind worship of a monster that would set up the universe in such a way.

Ok...going to try to do the best I can with limited space.
1 - God (perfect) created man for fellowship
2 - God gave only ONE prohibition ; don't eat of Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil (after all, why would He want us to know about evil - grief, pain, suffering, such on)
3 - both Adam & Eve stumbled on this one, and now there is the stain of rebellion in their heart.
4 - God is still perfect, with perfect Justice...so He departs from Adam & Eve (why? because His Perfect Justice can not stand in the presence of wrong-doing without taking action)
5 - Satan thinks he has won the big one - either God forgo His perfect justice and compromise in order to save man, or He chooses to never again have fellowship with man...God looses with either of those choices and satan wins.
6 - The penalty of Death enters our world (was never a creation of His)
7 - this punishment can only be removed with the Perfect sacrifice.....and Satan still wins...because with the mark of sin on man, no one is no longer perfect, and the sacrifice can't be made.
8 - God comes to man, walks our world of hurt with us, takes on the sorrows we feel, and offers Himself as sacrifice.
9 - Death is now defeated (Satan realizes a Royal Flush isn't the biggest hand to in this case of Texas Hold-em)
10 - Jesus now OFFERS a gift of salvation
11 - Man now has a CHOICE, accept or reject eternal fellowship once again.
12 - Some CHOOSE to ACCEPT the gift and in return, are given eternal fellowship
13 - Some CHOOSE to REJECT the gift of fellowship
14 - Physical death comes to all
15 - Some have accepted the gift of Spiritual Life and will have fellowship with God
16 - Those who have rejected the gift of fellowship with God, come to realize they have also rejected life after spiritual death.
17 - God honors man's heart...to those that want eternal fellowship, He honors them with citizenship in His kingdom.
18 - To those who did not want fellowship with Him in this life, He will honor that same wish in the next life, ergo, no Heaven.
Did He create us to destroy us? or do some of us CHOOSE to reject the gift of Heaven's citizenship?
Now..as for Him torturing anyone in Hell...not going to happen
That's right...you've just heard a Christian say you will not be tortured.
and to understand it...you have to understand this:
While I live here on this world, the pain, suffering, grief, this will be the only hell I know.
For those who choose not to enter Heaven...this world will be the only heaven they know...joy, happiness, fulfillment, laughter.
See...when you are in hell...it means you are completely seperated from anything OF God.....that means...for eternity...no joy, no happiness, no fulfillment, no laughter...and all that leaves is a loneliness you have never felt, a sadness so deep it will leave you crushed with its weight.
So....please...if any of this has even caused you ...or any other to pause...please...email me and I will do my best to answer your questions...because I'm just one hungry man trying to show another hungry man where the Bread of Life is.

That has been an age old question. But God loves us because He made us and wanted to have someone to communicate with other than angels. (which He had to take their free will because of the devil, an angel at the time he was in Heaven, rebelled and took 1/3 of the angels with him). But human beings He saw as His family of kind (even though Jesus is His Son. It can be seen in the Garden of Eden, what He had wanted for us. When He would come down to earth and talk with Adam and Eve every evening. Then when they sinned, it changed the way things were and the closeness to God was pushed a bit further away. But in sending His Son to die on the Cross, He has redeemed that relationship to Him, so we could be close to Him again.

Because He is God, God can do what He well pleases without asking anyone anything.
Some things you just cannot understand or explain but you do not have to to receive the gift of eternal life that God so freely offers to those who will come to Him on His terms and believe that JesusChrist is the one and only way to get to heaven. You must be willing to turn from and give up your sins and let Jesus Christ come into your life to live in you and teach you how to live to please HIm. If you are not willing to do that, God is not sending you to hell, you are sending yourself to hell by your unbelief. Don't blame God for your refusal of his offer to save you from your sins and give you a home in heaven when you die. Accept Jesus Christ as your own persoanl Lord and Savior today, without delay. This is my prayer for you. When/if you get to heaven, you can ask HIm your question. I'm sure He will have an answer then that you can accept and understand.

The answer by the Rev. was a good one but god also promised us that he would build a new earth where there was no crying, suffering, sin or war. God has given all of us free will, we can choose to follow him or not and that is your choice. And those how choose to follow him and believe in the savior shall be with him for eternity. The bible says that a holy god and not be surrounded by unholiness (sin), All have sinned and the punishment of sin is death. Our heavenly father longs to be with us and have a relationship with us, but is seperated from us because of sin. That is why he sent his son to bear our sins and die and raise again. Those who believe in believe in Jesus will be washed clean of their sins and therefore will be with god.
Why hell, because when Lucifer fell from heaven, God made him ruller of the underworld. Those who choose not to follow God our under Lucifer's charge. Not that God wants to lose any of his children, but there will come a time when God wrath will be upon the earth.

Are you trying to say the whole thing tells more about the God than He's saying outright?
Assuming He exists [for the moment] I agree with you. Also tells a lot about the kinds of minds who'd be drawn to believe in such a being and worship him.

"if hell was real, nobody would want to go."
Why not? Pride sometimes makes people do things that are against their best interests.
For God to destroy us would be a denial of the inherent value He granted us as part of His creation that He proclaimed as "good". Yet I believe I detect a bit of self-contradiction from biblical skeptics on this point. If God "merely" causes the physical death of someone (yet that person's spirit continues to exist) who was going to physically die sometime anyway due to reaping the wages of sin, they condemn Him as evil for doing so. On the other hand, if He refuses to annihilate someone, to destroy him or her so that it's as if he or she never existed, then they disparage Him for that as well.

The gods/goddesses had a lot of competition back then. Of course they really weren't gods, but to us they were. We fought their wars for them, raised their food, built their temples, houses and shrines, waited on them hand and foot. They did not want to lose any of that. So, how do you keep the faithful when you treat them like crap? Threaten them with hell. Jehovah was one of the least liked gods in Sumer. Yet, here he is still controlling his sheeple and trying to control everyone. Preposterous.

There are 162 references to HELL in the New Testament alone, over 70 of those spoken by Jesus Himself.
" He that believes (the gospel) and is baptized SHALL BE SAVED; he that believes not SHALL BE DAMNED ". - Jesus
"So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, and shall cast them into the furnace of fire; there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth". - Jesus (Matt. 13:49)
Jesus called it a literal place of REAL torment.
God ahs done everything possible to keep men OUT of hell.
It is your own choice if you decide to go.

" For the wages of sin is death, but the Gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ Our Lord". - (Romans 6:23)

God gave you and every other person alive, freewill. You can CHOOSE to accept Him and love Him, or you can CHOOSE to reject Him. He doesn't make that decision for you.......YOU DO. So..if you end up in hell....it's because that's what you CHOSE for yourself.
God is a loving God and doesn't want anyone in hell.....but....if you don't want to believe in Him and love Him....then, once again....YOU have made the choice.
You make countless choices everyday and this is another choice you make. No on makes it for you. You and only you. You know the facts, you know the consequences, so......YOU are in charge of where you spend eternity. YOU.

God has no desire to send anyone to hell. He has provided the means for every human being to avoid hell. However, when human beings insist upon going there, freely choosing to exclude God from their lives and to live apart from Him, what choice does God have? He honors their choice by providing a place where they can do what they have chosen to do - live apart from Him. Otherwise free will would be meaningless.
