I am curious to know the answer to this one, I would have thought a J for Jesus more appropriate>

Sorry Granny if I got you angry. I never said the M negated his loyalty to Jesus. I honestly don't understand the Catholic thing with Mary. Jesus himself never put her in the position that you have. I'm not trying to offend I'm trying to understand.

This is because it is a well known fact that Catholicism is based highly on worship favoring the Virgin Mary, sometimes I think moreso than the worship of God.

"The last Pope buried?" It wasn't that long ago, surely you knew his name. Amazing that John Paul II was Pope for 26 years, preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ consistently, yet an "M" on his coffin somehow negates all of that? Please.

He had a particular devotion to Mary, as do many Catholics. And it was his desire to honor her. Please note: Devotion and honor do not equal "worship" and/or "adoration".

Feel free to read for yourself what he believed and accomplished. See the link below.

Edit: Sweetie, I'm not angry, but it is frustrating when people fixate on the "Mary thing" to the exclusion of everything else. As for Jesus not putting her in the position we have, I beg to differ; he surely honored her, as that is one of the commandments. Our faith also honors her, quite openly and devotedly and in a big way, and I do understand that it's disconcerting to some. But Mary does for us what she also did at Cana: Points us straight to Jesus. "Do whatever he tells you." In no way is she seen as equal to Christ; this would dismay her greatly, don't you think?

Apologies for my tone in answering originally. Peace to you, my sister.

There was a LARGE cross on Pope John Paul II's coffin for Jesus. The M was smaller and in one quadrant of the cross. So he gave Jesus precedence and Mary was secondary -- as it should be.
