More of a personal proof to themselves that they have "charisma" or . . . whatever it takes to be what their friends call "manly."
The key issue is their lack of maturity and the "invincible" nature of teenagers, who can and should attempt to "do it all" because they cannot be hurt! Boys still need time to get the wiring to make full connections in their brains with regard to "cause and effect." They don't see the dangers, nor do they sense the morality of right and wrong.
Ahh, the trappings and failings of youth. To be that young, ignorant and invincible again. . . .
