To begin with, I'm not speaking for or against anything else anyone has said. I am just saying what my personal experience has been.
When I was in high school, I worked 2 different jobs over the course of 2 years. One was at a McDonald's and the other at Home Depot. I live in the South in Texas where Mexicans make up a significant amount of our population. The job at Home Depot was largely white with a few minorities and hardly any, if any Mexicans. The job at McDonald's was me, and the rest Mexican. I can't say for certain if they were all legal or not, but I can say that in my whole time there, I never saw but a few other high school students apply and the 2 they did hire quit after a month and 1.5 months respectively. My Co-workers made the same wage I did, worked just as hard, and were some of the best people I knew.
Again, I'm not taking sides, just presenting my experience. Interpret from it what you will.

The post above me by summermoondancer is ignorant. Please ignore the post.
Where are your statistics that "most illegals work in construction and fields that high school students and others under 18 years of age can't work"? Where is your proof that they don't "want these jobs"? And how do justify your claim that child labor laws affects the eligibility of high school students for jobs that MILLIONS of illegal aliens currently hold in the United States??
And where do you come off with the blanket statement that "they are not dependable employees?"
YOUR ENTIRE POST IS BS.
It was a refreshing break you being gone the last few days...why don't you return there?
summermoondancer. Your OPINION means nothing on here. You could claim to be polka dotted Martian and no one would know the difference. If you are going to make a claim you have to back it up with FACTS. Post your links proving all your claims if you expect any of it to be believed. I won't "hold my breath" waiting...because you can't prove what is not true.
Quite a few people on here have teenage children that have worked part time at summer employment or after school (me included) and will take great offense to your insult that illegal aliens are more dependable than our offspring. For one thing, my children are not criminals, and are not subject to deportation at any time as illegal aliens are.
BTW, the issue is not "immigrants" it is ILLEGAL ALIENS. Don't group illegal aliens together with legal immigrants, it's an insult to those that follow our laws and came here legally (my wife included).

Illegal aliens are taking jobs from MILLIONS of Americans, high school students included.
We have an immigration quota for a reason. If we honestly needed more workers, all that's required is to increase the LEGAL immigration quota. We do not NEED or want illegal aliens. They are competing with all Americans (and LEGAL immigrants) for employment, and sucking off our social services.

I think that logic tells us they must be. The immigration issue is interesting because we find supporters and detractors of the president's bill on either side of the aisle. I'm typically labeled a liberal, but I want some rather strict immigration regulations. I think that jobs are lost and the ones that aren't lost have had a drop in wages because of the fact that we have so many immigrants willing to do the job for less. We hear that these are jobs Americans won't perform, but the truth is that we won't perform them for the paltry wages paid to illegal immigrants. With regard to skilled labor, I don't know if the same is true, that is skilled alien workers are working for less than skilled American counterparts. I believe that is the reason that many back such legislation, to keep labor costs low. Does anyone else find it interesting to see Robert Byrd and Birch Bayh voting with the majority of republicans on this issue, and Trent Lott and Ted Kennedy voting together in favor of the president's plan?

No they aren't talk to the kids these days. They don't want these jobs. Not only that most work in construction and in the fields and neither of these jobs can be occupied by anyone under 18 years old because of child labor laws. Child labor laws also limit the hours a child can work as well as where they can work in a fast food place, ect. Not only that they are not dependable employees.
Wrong Toe crap I have 16 years experience with immigrants so pray tell what is your professional experience? I doubt you have any judging from your posts.

High School Students are still doing the jobs. Adults are still doing the jobs. We want them and need them and we are being forced out by illegal immigrants and those who hire, harbor and help them. I have a list of businesses that actually hire attorneys to keep American Citizens from even applying for the jobs. How can that be good for the USA? There is a big law firm in Pittsburgh, PA that actually holds seminars to help employers discriminate against U.S. Citizens and legal immigrants and then they lobby Congress telling them that they can't get workers because U.S. Citizens won't take the jobs. It's a GIANT SCAM that ORGANIZED CRIME and the ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT SUPPORT GROUPS are trying to force down the law-abiding citizens' throats. 100 U.S. Citizens have applied for nearly every 1 job that comes open where there isn't this scam artist type employment searches. Our middle and high school kids still want to mow lawns and shovel sidewalks and take fast food jobs because they want and need the money for their cars and school and to help their parents who are drowning in debt due to all the increased expenses without the corresponding increase in income. We need to ensure that we expose these companies and we need to report all illegal immigrants. Additionally, we need to demand that our local law enforcement officers get the 287G training that allows them to enforce the federal law. The fact is that we all are required to obey all the laws, federal, state and local and therefore our police officers should be able to enforce all the laws. We need a law that requires that all corporations and businesses must hire U.S. Citizens first and then the law-abiding immigrants. Illegal immigrants should never be hired. They are law breakers.

dastardly.
Your examples are PRECISELY the type jobs that legal immigrants and legal citizens are looking for that illegal aliens are currently filling. It's blatantly obvious that you purposely avoided listing those jobs that high school students DO work at. i.e. fast food, department stores, restaurants, etc.
Yes, I agree it is a little thing called fact of life. Americans need jobs and illegal aliens are taking them.
Thank you for acknowledging that illegal aliens do more than work for "50 cents an hour under the blazing sun picking apples"
Do you honestly think that people are that stupid?

Yeah right... remember doing construction in high school? how about working in a hotel laundry room? Picking fruit in a field? NO? what about road work? landscaping? sorry i just don't think these work around school schedules. Oh did you mean Immigrant high school students? No, they don't go to high school because that costs money in their country, anything past the 9th grade. But they do come here to do these jobs working as hard and the older men.

Sooo, are you saying that high school students are actually applying for these jobs? You see, the so called illegal alien doesn't actually TAKE anything. He or she applies and some then GIVES them a Job. You knuckleheads really ought to try thinking occasionally.

Absolutely yes. My son just graduated and most kids in his class can't find summer jobs. All jobs that were traditionally entry level/ summer jobs are now done by illegals.
Wages are also being driven down as a result.
Why pay a kid legal wage when you can screw an illegal?
Our youth are going to have a real tough time of it thaks to the total sellout of our "leaders".
