You may find cheaper autos like Kia etc... But the Subaru will out last all of them and give you more trade in value later.

You should probably ask yourself if you really need 4 wheel drive and why you need it (or think you need it but really don't).

If you need it because you drive off road then you'll have to get something that can handle off road driving which means you'll be buying a light truck (and it will have to be built stronger than something that just drives on the road). Don't try off road driving in a car based SUV because most of them just aren't built strong enough for off road work.

OTOH if you don't need off road driving then you probably don't need a 4 wheel drive and should be looking towards cheaper front drive cars.

In icy conditions 4 wheel drive can be nice to have but front drive is almost as good, also note that 4 wheel drive isn't going to let you brake any faster and it won't help with steering unless you push your car to the limit which you shouldn't be doing anyway, what is will do is allow you to start off when bogged down or on low traction surfaces.

You should be able to find out what is the cheapest car that will do what you need to do by looking at various manufacturers web sites.

That would be the Suzuki SX4. Not much is known about it in terms of safety and reliability, but it is the least expensive (base price is $14,999). I would look for a year-old (or two) Subaru, though...they generally last a long time, and are safe and reliable.
