No, my city (NY) has always been a center for immigrants. However, NY is one of the most economically viable cities in the country at the moment, so I'd say immigration has helped make it that way.

Worse, I live in Arlington Virginia, and I feel like I am in Mexico. The building I live in has many people of different races, white, black, hispanic, indian, arab. But the one thing we all have in common is we all speak english and our building is nice and clean. Part of the reason is because our building has minimum income requirements. For example a 1 bedroom apt, (which me and my fiance rent) requires an income of $41,000 a year(I am not sure of the other apartments) and a restriction of how many people can live there,2 for a 1BR, 4 for a 2BR. So and illegal making $8 an hour won't be able to afford. The problem is, not all apartments have the same restrictions. Across the street is a garden style apartment with no restrictions. There are junked cars on blocks, mattresses in the parking lot, rusted bikes on the balconies. It is a mess. Many employees of the local stores (chain stores) don't speak english. I take most of my business elsewhere. I do my grocery shopping in Falls Church(next town over), or in Pentagon City or Crystal City for other things (much nicer areas, places with $1700 1BR apartments high class of people.) I live in a nice safe apartments, but the surrounding areas while not dangerous, are slimey looking. We can only afford about $1200 a month for an apartment, so we need to live in a nice place in a less desirable area, or live further away from the city. But an hour commute is not something either of us want to do. Half the hispanics in this town are illegal, and that needs to be fixed.

Most people who blame immigrants (illegals) are bullshitting. They blame long-standing issues such as gangs on illegals. Never mind that gang violence has decrease while the illegals have increased. And the employment rate is up. Etc.
To someone who's scared of differences, immigrants/illegals will always be bad, because they need a scapegoat and the most unknown becomes a natural target. To those who say, ah, it's only the illegals. Nonsense. While in some case it's true, most things said about them is commonly said about legal immigrants under normal conditions, and immigrants are always blamed for problems. Many of these could just as well have been legal. The sentiments would remain, but perhaps not expressed, as much.
Immigration is positive and negative; depending on who the immigrant or citizen is. For example, in the case of Yahoo!, it was founded by a citizen & an immigrant. So people who rant about immigrants should also thank immigration for giving them a nice forum to do so on.

Immigration has done little. Illegal immigration alot. 98% Hispanic. No decent grocery stores, people standing on major street corners everywhere, police helicopters flying over all the time, crime, rapes, child molesters, trashy yards, with junky cars, tagging, gangs. Can't go to the park on the corner because of the gangs. Can't sit on my front porch, because of the gangs. Drive by shootings. What you see on TV and read in the papers, is true. I live it everyday.

Several county council members run construction companies that employ illegals so they have blocked laws that would make companies verify the legal working status of employees. They have undercut lots of local construction workers by paying LESS THAN MINIMUM WAGE in cash under the table. They're making a killing, friends of mine are having to either move or travel long distances to find work.
