Are there any ways or indicators to tell (when the words seem to be all smashed together)?

What's up with that answer, dumb***? If you're not going to help, don't bother reading the question (to granny, not the other answerer).

It's a very good question and I've been having the same problem learning Japanese too. But I found the following two simple rules would help:

1) Try to look for particles (no, ni, wa, de, etc)
2) Improve the vocabularies/use a dictionary.

If the text has kanjis, it helps greatly to understand.

As you learn to read Japanese more fluently, it should become easier to tell the beginning/end of words.

There is no rule. An indication would be found in the Hiragana as they are used as modifiers (endings in adjectives, verbs) or particles. In the beginning is real hard but after a while you begin to recognize frequent patterns. But, as they say, Japanese is a language you learn your entire life. Good luck!

First you must remove you thinking cap. It obviously does not work.

Sorry.... didn't mean to insult you. Thought you were just joking didn't know you were serious.
If I were Japanese I probably would have been offended by the way you criticized their writing.

For example..
ここではきものをぬいでください。
It has two means.
1) Put off your clothes,here
2)Put off your shoes,here
はきもの=shoes
きもの=clothes
But Usually we use kanji.

1)ここでは着物を脱いでください。
2)ここで履物を脱いでください。

all of Hiragana or katakana sentences are too dificult to read.
