Never thought about it before, it's an American expression that means, basically, "Try to make sense of THAT one," or "I'm at a loss, see if YOU can figure it out!" It can also mean "That's the dumbest thing I'VE ever heard of, I don't think anything can top it .", or "Have you EVER heard of anything so ridiculous?!" I think we say it so much, we know what it means, but it's a little hard to vocalize exactly what it means.

It's generally used in an ironic sense to indicate mock surprise at something and means "go and figure out how this happened," or "who would have guessed that such a thing would happen."

For example, someone might say, "I read in the paper that George W. Bush has mispronounced another big word." The person to whom the remark was addressed might say "Go figure."

It means that whatever the subject was doesn't make any sense.

Like 'soldiers continue to die in the midst of a civil war in iraq while dubya goes on vacation'

Go figure.
