I would use a mango yellow/gold; my dining room is deep red with white and mango, and is gorgeous in my opinion.

The reason you have heard green is because green and red are complementary colors.... think Christmas... No. I don't suggest green, as they are complementary colors, they will really make one another shout out their colors. You'll find it too vibrant... Here are some other color suggestions that would work for what you want as a mood in your dorm room:
Soft dusty rose pinks
Muted gold shades
If you really want to go green, then go with a soft moss green
Deep pumpkin orange
Soft milk chocolate brown
Soft sky blue
Dusky charcoal gray
Silver... which would look fantastic!
Warm dusky gray
Enjoy dorm life!

I really don't think green is the way to go. You have lots of choices though with red and white. If you want a dramatic look, choose black accents, but for a cheery, vibrant room choose yellow. Neither of these choices, however, will give you the warm, cozy feeling you are after. To "warm up" the red and white, use deep tans or browns. Good luck with your college career!

If you're going with green, most likely a lime green color...something more vibrant than a darker, more subdued shade of green. Purple would also work.
You could try getting some paint color samples from Home Depot (or another similar store) and place them with your bedding and see what jumps out at you.
Best wishes!

Try double-sided tape. Scotch brand is easy and comes in a roll just like regular tape. This will lie flatter than the clay-type stuff, but is harder to remove. It will still come off the walls, but probably not the paper.
