Well, you're question isn't clear. Do you mean the base of the plant ie. the roots, or the base of the leaf, or do you in fact mean a base as in an alkaline substance?

The base of the leaf keeps the leaf attached to the plant stem. If not for this base, the leaf would hardly have formed before it fell to the ground.

leaf base connects the leaf to the stem/branch at the node and acts as a pipe for trans of water,minerals and food to the leaf
