It is likely because that was NORMAL IN THAT CULTURE. Adolescent girls were usually married to men who had completed their training and were "in business," late teens to late 20's. As I say, this was normal in that culture, but, as a result of this, there were many widows because the older husband would die leaving his younger wife a widow. This is all in line with the things we observe in the New Testament.

The Bible doesn't say how old Mary was as you have noted. It is possible that Mary was 13 or 14 because she would have been old enough to have children and women got married at a younger age back then than they do now. When you read the story of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo was 16 and Juliet was 14.
Unless a girl has developed outside of the normal time line, when she is 9 years old she has not gone through puberty which has historically been the time when a woman was considered to be old enough to get married.

So you're saying that when "God's People" done "God's Work" and burned hundreds of people at the stake, that's ok??
The ancient Egyptian Pharos used to have sex with little boys.
I think it's disgusting myself, but I don't think a Christian has the right to say ANYTHING about ANYONE elses religion, as it has been the Christan and Catholic Churches that have committed some of the greatest atrocities over the past few hundred years.
Answer this Question:
How many of God's Workers are behind bars for Peadophilia??
I'm pretty sure I see it on the news almost every day.

You must read the Bible in the context of the history and the culture of the time. Don't try to put it in our time and culture.. it's not the same!
2000 years ago, 13 was a "young lady". Women were married and having children by then. Avg. life expectancy was in the 40s and 50s, not 90!
Also, by this time young men would have been expected to be out earning a living, as an apprentice to some one or on his own.
The concept of "teen ager" didn't come about until about 150 years ago. Prior to that, you were either at school or earning money to keep the family going.
Look at the time frame that we become "women".... breast developing, hips widening, body hair, menstrual cycle.... most of this happens in our early teens... our bodies are physically ready to have babies. We just now tell teens to keep it in their pants until they are married 10 - 15 years down the road!
So, sorry.... no one was a paedophile and she was not too young to be having a baby!

I believe that there is anecdotal evidence that Mary was only 13 - from sources outside the bible - and put in a cultural context, she would have been considered a woman as she menstruated. Fortunately we are more enlightened now to know that someone who has reached physical maturity is not yet an adult for reasons of consent.
I think that comparing Christianity and Islam is like comparing apples and oranges.

It may be true that Mary was only 13, as you pointed out, the Bible does not say.
It was customary for Jewish men at the time of Jesus' birth to be about 30-35 years old when then God married. 30 was the age of complete independence and it gave the man time to get his career underway so as he could support his family (to be).
It was also normal for women to be given as wives when they were in there teen.
Life was harder on people then.
Both men and women developed mentally faster and became mature at an earlier age.
As life was harder, it was also wise that a woman have here children early in life so she would live long enough to raise them, and the man had to have put away enough money for them to live on if he should pass away (like Joseph).

There's no specific documentation of the Blesses Mother's age when she concieved Jesus. But, those kinds of details are rarely found in the bible. It isn't to unreasonable to assume that she was very young. The culture and times were different back then, of course. She would have been of the proper age for a Jewish maiden at that time. and that could have very well been much younger than the woman of today's time.
As far as Mohammed, I have no knowledge of him or of that religion.

There is no mention of Mary's age. Marriage at the age of 13 was not uncommon at that time and place. But from her words, Mary sounds wise far beyond the age of 13.
The intent of pedophilia is sexual lust. The society Mary and Joseph lived in had many safeguards against pedophilia as a motive for marriage.

like other people have said you have to look at the life expectancy of the people back than.. also back then a girl was considered "mature"/an adult after she hit puberty..
as far as Mohammad goes.. first of all i think its very ignorant of you to say things without knowing the facts.. Mohammad did marry a girl who was very young but it was only after she hit puberty.. so according to their culture she was an adult and it was perfectly acceptable for her to get married..
different cultures have different traditions (for example mexicans have quincinaras (?) and say that a girl is a woman at the age of 15 while Americans dont view someone as an adult until the age of 18..)
there are manyyyyyyyyyyyy reasons behind why Mohammad married the different girls he did and if you are really interested in actually learning rather than putting a religion down you should contact me..
oh one last thing i'm so glad to hear that you're an atheist because a person like you who has no respect for religion (regardless of what religion it is) doesn't deserve to call herself a Christian/Muslim or belong to any other faith because people who have respect for their religion at least respect other people's religion even if they dont agree with it.. so dont convert to anything unless you can be open minded and respect others!!

I sure by today's standard, this sounds unrealistic. But the facts are based on the average age that family's came into agreement about a betrothal and marriage. This was strictly a standard, cultural thing in that period of time. Even when we study early American history, we find women married around 15. What's even more surprising is that the life expectancy was to their 40's.

she was young and age is not mentioned in the books. When u will leave ur foul speaking about heroes of different nations and especially about pious prophets. I pray God guide u or take u out of this community. I have replied u many a times but u again come with same question. u know why pig is not allowed to eat in Islam. Beside many other reasons one is that it comes again and again to eat its own excretion.
