Microcontrollers have memory (program and data memory), input/output ports, timers, counters, oscillators, and of course the processor unit, all built into the chip. Some microcontrollers (not the 8051) even have built-in ADCs and DACs!
Microprocessors require external memory, external I/O ports, external address decoding, and other external peripherals (timers, counters, etc.) to function usefully.

A micro controller is self sufficient and doesn't require external resources like memory to be attached.
